Great for beginners and those man or woman enough to admit they want to be better kissers

This is in all honesty really a book for people figuring out how to kiss, either those who have never kissed - like pre-teens who want to be sure they don't screw up - or people who have kissed - and are man or woman enough to admit they're pretty bad at it.

There's a trivia section at the front and a how-to section after that. If you're not into knowing the kind of obscure facts that come up on Jeopardy! then it's fine to just skip ahead and get to the real reason you bought the book.

Granted, it can be off-putting to have the steps and techniques of something as intimate as kissing explained in great detail. Just keep in mind that the point here is to teach a good basic technique from the ground up, and I found the no-nonsense approach of the author, splashed with a healthy dose of (forgive the pun) tongue-in-cheek humor, to be a great way of breaking the awkwardness of things like realizing you've been puckering your lips wrong all along. There's even a handy flow chart!

Really, when you've had it clearly explained to you how to do it right, you can focus more on how fun it is to kiss!

Everything You SHOULD Already Know

Knowing that this book was really meant all in good fun makes me pause before saying anything negative about it. How can you NOT love kissing, and who wouldn't want to read an entire book about such an engaging topic. Granted, Ms. Edmark provides the reader with many entertaining quotes pertaining to smooching, snogging, face-sucking, whatever term you prefer. This book contains quotes by everyone from Dorothy Parker to Princess Leia. However, once you get into the real meat of the book, it is rather off-putting to find exact descriptions as to how to perform something as simple as a French Kiss. Perhaps this book might be of some assistance to those preteen romantics, wondering if they are doing it "right." But the book is fun, and I guarantee that you can find at least one kind of kiss that you've never even thought of trying, and I'll bet that you'll run to your lover and demonstrate immediately.

Using his spaceship of the imagination-Mox-he becomes an intergalactic ranger and soars off to compete in a championship Super Shooter tournament. But he soon discovers that he got a little more than he bargained for. In order for him to win the tournament, he has to face witches, monkey-boys, rats, a worm, and a host of other entities. Using his imagination and intuition, Gray finds creative solutions to the challenges that lie ahead of him, both in the universe of his imagination and in the real world. "So, we pick ourselves back up and continue to dance."

We loved this character!

I was telling someone about this book the other day, and after I told them the title, Gray Locke: The Witch of Clover Hill they started talking about how popular the Harry Potter books were and how great they are for kids. I kept saying, yeah - but witches don't exist because in Gray Locke's world, witches don't exist. Seriously, they don't.

I read this book with my 6 year old son and he LOVED it and has asked me to read it to him again, which I will happily oblige as I really enjoyed the book too. This is a book about a young boy who is very smart and very reality based. But that doesn't mean he isn't interested in things. He has quite a great imagination this kid. In fact, he's a lot like my son. As we were reading it we kept saying, - wow - that's just like you. Everything from drinking ovaltine in the morning to playing with LEGOs.

As a Humanist parent, I liked the book because it shows just how much better the world is when you abandon your fears of the unknown and just go ahead and find out what the truth is. At it's heart, this book is a mystery and don't let the fact it is reality based fool, you, there is plenty of mystery there to sort out. You simply don't have to abandon reality to have a great supernatural mystery to solve.

My only complaint was that the book ended too soon. Gray Locke is a character I want to follow and get to know better as does my son. Fortunately, author C.A. Chicoine's has promised to follow Locke through out his childhood into his adult years so, C.A. get on that please!

Oh, and one last thing, C.A. is kind enough to provide links to various reality based details of his story and he provides the rules for two different marble games that are played in the book, and yes, my son and I are planning to play both games over the weekend! It really is a great book and you will enjoy it.

Fun, magical adventure

Gray Locke, The Witch of Clover Hill begins in Marlborough, Mass. The main character, Gray is often found in the company of his two close friends, Kevin and Doug. They go off in search of good luck charms, only to ponder if they really do bring you luck, or is it just a myth? The story takes turn, when the boys meet Mandy and her close friend, P.J. An old Ouija board is discovered at Gray's home and P.J. takes a big interest in finding a witch to help them contact a spirit close to Gray. But does P.J. have any right to do this, and how many people will she upset in her quest for fun?
Around the same time, Gray's aunt stops by with a wonderful gift for Gray that opens up an entire new universe for him. Seems like this was gift that found it's way into Gray's life just when he may have needed it most. At this point in the story, get ready for some mystical adventures packed full of imagination and intuition.
I had so much fun reading this story. This YA novel would be a fantastic read for boys and girls ages 9 and up. The story is approximately 199 pages long. It was really refreshing to see these kids using their imagination to find their place in the world. (I think a lot of that is missing in today's society.) Kids and adults will also enjoy the positive messages sporadically found throughout the book. For example, "You can't go through life worrying about what other people think," said Priscilla. "It's best to be with the ones who know and accept you for who you are." Later on, regarding the topic of good luck charms and our belief in their special powers, Gray tells his friends, "It's sort of like a motivational tool...you're given a good luck charm as a token to help motivate and inspire you to focus on only the good thoughts to help you through the day."
I believe this is the 2nd book in the Gray Locke series, but it can definitely be read as a stand alone novel. I recommend this book and am looking forward to reading more about Gray in future stories.

I loved this book -- so thought-provoking and enlightening. Gave me a new way to think about how technology is changing my reality. It was interesting, reading it in an airport on my Droid; it gave me a way to stand outside myself and experience all the layers of what I was doing at the moment. Without a shadow of a doubt

This is an excellent summary of how the way we document our daily lives with smartphones and social media shapes our behaviour. It's also a reflect upon our memories vs our experiences of the everyday world. I enjoyed reading this because the author writes clearly and in a entertaining manner. These ideas can be explored in more detail but as they stand, it's so much more accessible.

A great meditation on the increasing tensions we face as technology continues to disintermediate time, space and community -- documentation vs. participation, physical co-presence vs. online communities, and content vs. references to the content of others... all of these conundrums get treatment. I loved this book -- thought-provoking and enlightening.

Mr. Windchy made quite an effort to locate me when he was researching his book on Tonkin Gulf. When he succeeded he arranged for us to meet for dinner at a Japanese restaurant. Later in the evening when he excused himself to go to the restroom a Japanese lady came to our table. She said she was the owner of the restaurant and wanted to tell me my friend (Eugene) was so accomplished in the Japanese language he could he carry on a two-level conversation in Japanese as if it was his native language. She said she had never seen any other non-Japanese person with that capability. The point was important because it identified Mr. Windchy's character. When he committed to a project such as: "Twelve American Wars: Nine of Them Avoidable," his research was meticulous and complete. His intent was not an exhaustive history of each war. Others have done that. He focused on the events, decisions, communication, and/or failure of communication that led to war. He avoided dramatic language, and where two or more sources disagreed he presented the view of each in a manner that allowed the reader to reach their own conclusion. The presentation on each war ended with; "Lessons to be Learned." In so doing he shifted the focus from the customary political and moral arguments to a very practical process that should appeal to anyone and everyone interested in U.S. foreign policy. I will go further then that and say it should be required reading for high level military personnel, government employees, politicians, and others who seek to influence decisions war.

This is a must read for anyone interested in the wars America has fought. Mr. Windchy has followed up his widely proclaimed book on the Tonkin gulf incident with this extensively researched and easy to read accounting of the people behind the policies and actions that led us into twelve wars,nine of which he brilliantly reveals we should not have fought. I know of no other book published that addresses this topic with such abundant and relative detail. This is a military history gem, not about trenches and guns, but about intrigue most have never heard of or suspected. This is should be included in every political science and American history course in American universities and military service academies. Without any doubt, he has earned five stars.

Eugene Windchy is to be commended for researching and analyzing the conditions leading up to twelve wars in which the United States has been involved. There have been innumerable books describing these wars, phase by phase. In most cases, we cannot learn from how the wars were fought. This book, perhaps, can give us food for thought on how to avoid war, save lives, and encourage peace in this world.
This book is recommended reading for our present-day politicians in Washington. I, as a concerned American, will recommend it to my friends, family, and associates.

About the Author
Jeff Abugov graduated from Concordia University Film School in Montreal where his two student films won national awards at the Canadian Student Film Festival. He began his professional career writing freelance for the NBC hit Cheers for which he eventually became a staff writer and then story editor. He served as executive story editor on The Golden Girls, then went on to write and produce such hit shows as Roseanne and Two and a Half Men. He served as executive producer of Roc and Grace Under Fire, and most recently of the animated series Fugget About It. He also wrote and directed the feature film The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human, starring David Hyde Pierce and Carmen Electra. He has received a Golden Globe Award, a Peabody Award, and three People’s Choice Awards, as well as being nominated for a Humanitas Prize, a Canadian Screen Award, and a second Golden Globe. After having achieved success writing and producing within the Hollywood system, doing as he’s told and playing nice, Jeff has at long last decided to let his imagination run rampant and do it his own way . . . and he’s having a blast! Exactly as promised.

A fun, funny and satirical book that still manages to grab you with it's action. It reads like a movie you'd really like to see. While the author is clearly having fun (and trying to sell books) with this title, he delivers everything that the cover promises plus more surprises. A perfect beach or ski lodge book - it won't change the world, but it's a hell of a lot of fun.

A highly enjoyable and surprisingly well-researched novel. Do not let the title fool you, it's much more complex than that! No, it's not the second-coming of "The Sound and Fury" but it delivers exactly what it promises; a fun, entertaining, engaging and exciting story that keeps you wanting more.

The burning question I'm left with is, "When will I get to see this on the big screen?" It has the makings of the next biggest Hollywood Franchise.

A Good History of Lambik Beer

A well presented book on this unique type of beer. The book has unusual beer-colored splotches on most of the pages which in my opinion add to the mood of the book. The first part of the book describes the lambik, geuze (or should it be gueuze? - the book is silent on this matter) and fruit beer making / blending processes. The major part of the book details each lambik maker and geuze blender. The history of each family going back over 100 years is described in some detail. This is a good read and really enlightened me to this ancient beer which I have much enjoyed when previously in Belgium. Two small quibbles - the photos are almost ethereal in presentation but all lack captions - I think captions for at least some photos would have been instructive. Secondly whilst reading the details of each brewery / blender there are a few terms used which were not described in the first part of the book eg skimming kettles. Maybe the first part of the book on the making process needs to be slightly more detailed in order to get the most out of the main part of the book? Anyway this book is recommended to anyone interested in this style of beer.

If you are already familiar with technical aspects of lambic brewing and tasting, this book will offer you the chance of knowing in depth all lambic brewers and gueuze blenders in Belgium. It covers extensive information on the history of each producer and describes a few techical data on each, but the book as a whole lacks more technical information. Although there is a lot on specific brewers, there is too little general information on the styles covered, and almost nothing about the lambic brewing processes. The visual aspect of the book, however, is stunning, with a lot of beautiful and inspiring pictures taken on every brewer and blender. If you look for technical information, try "Wild brews", by Jeff Sparrow. However, if you are interested in knowing in depth specific brewers and blenders, this is a great reference.

Good tome on a mysterious beverage

This book gives a great history of not only lambic and gueuze, but of each brewer and blender dealing with such. A very good overview of the process is included. There are a few things I learned, but most of it was already known through exhaustive searches and researching myself. If you are coming to this book with just a brief understanding of lambic, you will pick up a great deal of knowledge. On the other hand, if you could write a research document on the subject, you might just pick this up to add to your collection of beer related books.

The only qualms that I have with the book is not in the content. Just minor gripes. The pages are really thick. I kept thinking I was skipping pages every time I turned the page. It feels like two pages stuck together. And each page looks like someone skimmed through it with dirty hands. I guess this is to give it a rustic, workbook, type feel to it. It is sometimes distracting, but not overly so. The content is great and is up to date, as of this writing.

Overall the book is awesome, chock full of great information. The above complaints do nothing to take away from the actual content and I cannot ding the overall rating for a few small quibbles that are just personal feelings. I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone that knows nothing of the subject, or has a cursory knowledge and is eager to learn more. If you brew lambic already (you would be in the book if you did), it could be of use for just the history of the other brewers. Great book!
