Review

"Reading Poetry stands out from other introductions to poetry in its brilliant combination of practical guidance and theoretical savvy. Students who use this book will be helped to enjoy and discuss poems, introduced to some of the major varieties of poetic criticism, and invited to reflect on what makes poetry important today. Reading Poetry is, in my view, the best introductory book on the study of poetry available. " - Professor Derek Attridge, Universityof York

From the Publisher
Reading Poetry provides an introduction to the ideas and techniques that can help students produce informed and exciting readings of poetry. Many readers will have already acquired the basis for self-conscious and self-critical reading strategies through their everyday responses to popular culture. This innovative new textbook will help develop these strategies and interpretive skills by recognizing and explaining the open and multi- dimensional qualities of the poetic text. At the same time, Reading Poetry is theoretically informed and up-to-date, taking into account the wealth of theoretical speculation about poetry, and literature in general, the twentieth century has produced. A wide spectrum of examples has been included, ranging from fifteenth-century lyrics and ballads to contemporary poetry from all over the English-speaking world.

From the Back Cover

“Reading Poetry stands out from other introductions to poetry in its brilliant combination of practical guidance and theoretical savvy. Students who use this book will be helped to enjoy and discuss poems, introduced to some of the major varieties of poetic criticism, and invited to reflect on what makes poetry important today.”

Professor Derek Attridge, University of York

Reading Poetry is a comprehensive, accessible and extremely effective guide to the arts of reading, analysing and enjoying poetry. From the opening chapter, which examines assumptions about what poetry might be, successive chapters map a path that takes the reader from the basics of simple appreciation to an understanding of the often complex theoretical and historical contexts that enrich any appreciation of poetry.

While emphasising the importance of close textual analysis – or reading in slow motion – the authors clearly demonstrate how an understanding of form, language and context can combine to produce sophisticated and original responses to all types of poetry.

The second edition of this best-selling book includes a number of developments that make it more user-friendly for the individual reader and more suitable as a stand-alone textbook for university courses in poetry. The poetic examples have been increased to 150, ranging from the 14th to the 21st century, and clear guidance is provided on further reading in footnotes and an expanded bibliography. This edition includes a new chapter on Post-Colonial Poetry, a substantial increase in the number of end-of-chapter exercises, and a comprehensive Glossary of Poetic Terms. The aim of the book is preserved from that of the first edition, namely to enhance readers’ literary and scholarly competence, and to restore enjoyment to the reading of poetry.

Tom Furniss is Senior Lecturer in English Studies at the Universityof Strathclyde in Glasgow, where he has spent nearly twenty years teaching poetry, literary theory and Romanticism. Michael Bath taught English literature for more than 30 years at the University of Strathclyde, where his research interests centred on relations between literature and the visual arts, emblems and iconology.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, February 2010: From a single, abbreviated life grew a seemingly immortal line of cells that made some of the most crucial innovations in modern science possible. And from that same life, and those cells, Rebecca Skloot has fashioned in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks a fascinating and moving story of medicine and family, of how life is sustained in laboratories and in memory. Henrietta Lacks was a mother of five in Baltimore, a poor African American migrant from the tobacco farms of Virginia, who died from a cruelly aggressive cancer at the age of 30 in 1951. A sample of her cancerous tissue, taken without her knowledge or consent, as was the custom then, turned out to provide one of the holy grails of mid-century biology: human cells that could survive--even thrive--in the lab. Known as HeLa cells, their stunning potency gave scientists a building block for countless breakthroughs, beginning with the cure for polio. Meanwhile, Henrietta's family continued to live in poverty and frequently poor health, and their discovery decades later of her unknowing contribution--and her cells' strange survival--left them full of pride, anger, and suspicion. For a decade, Skloot doggedly but compassionately gathered the threads of these stories, slowly gaining the trust of the family while helping them learn the truth about Henrietta, and with their aid she tells a rich and haunting story that asks the questions, Who owns our bodies? And who carries our memories? --Tom Nissley

Amazon Exclusive: Jad Abumrad Reviews The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Jad Abumrad is host and creator of the public radio hit Radiolab, now in its seventh season and reaching over a million people monthly. Radiolab combines cutting-edge production with a philosophical approach to big ideas in science and beyond, and an inventive method of storytelling. Abumrad has won numerous awards, including a National Headliner Award in Radio and an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science Journalism Award. Read his exclusive Amazon guest review of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks:

Honestly, I can't imagine a better tale.

A detective story that's at once mythically large and painfully intimate.

Just the simple facts are hard to believe: that in 1951, a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks dies of cervical cancer, but pieces of the tumor that killed her--taken without her knowledge or consent--live on, first in one lab, then in hundreds, then thousands, then in giant factories churning out polio vaccines, then aboard rocket ships launched into space. The cells from this one tumor would spawn a multi-billion dollar industry and become a foundation of modern science--leading to breakthroughs in gene mapping, cloning and fertility and helping to discover how viruses work and how cancer develops (among a million other things). All of which is to say: the science end of this story is enough to blow one's mind right out of one's face.

But what's truly remarkable about Rebecca Skloot's book is that we also get the rest of the story, the part that could have easily remained hidden had she not spent ten years unearthing it: Who was Henrietta Lacks? How did she live? How she did die? Did her family know that she'd become, in some sense, immortal, and how did that affect them? These are crucial questions, because science should never forget the people who gave it life. And so, what unfolds is not only a reporting tour de force but also a very entertaining account of Henrietta, her ancestors, her cells and the scientists who grew them.

The book ultimately channels its journey of discovery though Henrietta's youngest daughter, Deborah, who never knew her mother, and who dreamt of one day being a scientist.

As Deborah Lacks and Skloot search for answers, we're bounced effortlessly from the tiny tobacco-farming Virginia hamlet of Henrietta's childhood to modern-day Baltimore, where Henrietta's family remains. Along the way, a series of unforgettable juxtapositions: cell culturing bumps into faith healings, cutting edge medicine collides with the dark truth that Henrietta's family can't afford the health insurance to care for diseases their mother's cells have helped to cure.

Rebecca Skloot tells the story with great sensitivity, urgency and, in the end, damn fine writing. I highly recommend this book. --Jad Abumrad

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Science journalist Skloot makes a remarkable debut with this multilayered story about faith, science, journalism, and grace. It is also a tale of medical wonders and medical arrogance, racism, poverty and the bond that grows, sometimes painfully, between two very different women—Skloot and Deborah Lacks—sharing an obsession to learn about Deborah's mother, Henrietta, and her magical, immortal cells. Henrietta Lacks was a 31-year-old black mother of five in Baltimore when she died of cervical cancer in 1951. Without her knowledge, doctors treating her at Johns Hopkins took tissue samples from her cervix for research. They spawned the first viable, indeed miraculously productive, cell line—known as HeLa. These cells have aided in medical discoveries from the polio vaccine to AIDS treatments. What Skloot so poignantly portrays is the devastating impact Henrietta's death and the eventual importance of her cells had on her husband and children. Skloot's portraits of Deborah, her father and brothers are so vibrant and immediate they recall Adrian Nicole LeBlanc's Random Family. Writing in plain, clear prose, Skloot avoids melodrama and makes no judgments. Letting people and events speak for themselves, Skloot tells a rich, resonant tale of modern science, the wonders it can perform and how easily it can exploit society's most vulnerable people. (Feb.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
In simple, straightforward prose, Skloot brings to life the woman unknowingly behind some of the 20th century's greatest medical advancements. In the process, she exposes the minefield of scientific, legal, and philosophical questions raised by Lacks's unwitting legacy. Skloot, who deftly weaves together the disparate threads of biography, science, and social history, provides a remarkably evenhanded assessment of the shadier dealings of the biomedical industry despite her obvious affection and sympathy for the Lacks family. Scientifically challenged readers will rejoice in Skloot's ability to explain complex technical processes in layperson's terms. Hailed by the New York Times as "the book Ms. Skloot was born to write," The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks "is an important book, one that will linger--like Henrietta's cells--long after you've turned the last page" (Chicago Sun-Times).

Thank you for this beautiful tribute to Henrietta Lacks
By EJ
Wow. This book should be required reading for scientists and students of life. The true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family has finally been told, beautifully, in this book. The book encompasses science, ethics, and the story of a family who was terribly wronged in the pursuit of scientific research. I could gush about this book for pages but I'll try first to hit the main points of why this book is so remarkable in list form for the sake of brevity:

1. The author clearly developed a strong relationship with the Lacks family, which was absolutely critical to ensuring the story was told accurately and with the respect to Henrietta Lacks that was so deeply deserved.

2. The storytelling is amazingly moving despite the need to convey a lot of scientific information. It reads like fiction.

3. Ms. Skloot's research into the science is impeccable.

4. The book is FAIR. It presents the unvarnished truth, obtained DIRECTLY from as many prinicpal people involved in the story as is humanly possible. It would have been easier to simplify the story into heroes vs. villians, but Ms. Skloot deftly handles all sides of the story.

For some detail: I have worked with HeLa cells in the past, but did not know even the barest information about the story of Henrietta Lacks until a few years ago. It simply was not common knowledge, until a few less ethical folks released her name and medical records to the public. This obviously should not have been done without the express permission of the Lacks family, which Ms. Skloot obtained. In the past, others have not been as ethical. The book covers Ms. Lacks' early life, how her cells came to be harvested, and what happened to both the cells and her family afterward.

The contributions of HeLa cells to science are absolutely staggering and cannot be over-stated. The sections where the science was described were clear and accurate. With the story of Ms. Lacks' family interwoven, this book was fairly close to perfect. I found myself moved to tears several times because of the fate of the Lacks family and Henrietta's daughter's indomitable spirit. I do not think anyone but Ms. Skloot could have written this book. She worked with the family for over a decade in order to get the story right. This was critical, as the family had been wronged too many times in the past.

Thank you for this astounding work of art. I will be donating to the Henrietta Lacks foundation in honor of the entire family, and I hope many others will read the book and be similarly moved.

Captivating, engrossing, fascinating, heartbreaking, englightening...ALL in one stellar book!
By Living it up
This is hand's down one of the best books I've read in years and I wish I could give it more stars. It is going to be difficult to capture exactly what makes this book so outstanding and so captivating, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

First of all I want to say I am STUNNED that this is the author's first book. She has poured ten years of her heart, soul, mind and her life in general in this book. What she has given birth to in that long period of labor is worthy of her sacrifice and honors Henrietta Lacks and her family.

Other reviews have given the outline of this amazing story. What I want to stress is that Ms. Skloot has navigated the difficult terrain of respecting Mrs. Lacks and her family, while still telling their story in a very intimate, thorough, factual manner. What readers may not know is that the Lacks family isn't just a "subject" that the author researched. This is a real family with real heartaches and real challenges whose lives she entered into for a very long season. The Lacks' family has truly benefitted from the author's involvement in their life and that is something I am very appreciative of. I believe that Ms. Skloot was able to give Henrietta's daughter, Deborah, a real sense of healing, deliverance, peace and identity that she had been searching for her whole life...that story alone would have made the book for me.

It would have been very easy for the author to come across as condescending or patronizing or possibly as being exploitive as she wrote about a family that is poor and uneducated. Instead the story is infused with compassion and patience as she not only takes the family along with her on a journey to understand their current situation and the ancestor whose life was so rich in legacy but poor in compensation; she educates the family in the process. I get the sense that the author grew to genuinely love Henrietta and her family. I am in awe of this level of commitment.

The author has managed to explain the complex scientific information in a way that anyone can comprehend and be fascinated by. The author's telling of the science alone and the journey of Henrietta's immortal cells (HeLa) would have made the book a worthy read in itself. Ms. Skloot and Henrietta captured me from page one all the way to the final page of the book. I read it in one pass and I didn't want it to end.

The author manages to beautifully tell multiple stories and develops each of those stories so well that you can't help but be consumed by the book. This is the story of Henrietta. It is the story of her sweet and determined daughter, Deborah. It is the story of the extended Lacks family and their history. It is a story of race/poverty/ignorance and people who take advantage of that unfortunate trifecta. It is a story about science and ethics. It is a story that should make each of us reflect on the sacrifices made by individual humans and animals that have allowed us to benefit so much from "modern" medicine. It is a story about hope and perseverance. It is a story about love and healing.

I cannot imagine a single person I know who wouldn't love this book and benefit from reading it. I will be purchasing the final copy of the book and am looking forward to reading the book again.

I am counting the days til Ms. Skloot writes another book and can't wait to attend one of her upcoming lectures. A fan is born!

2010 Non-Fiction Award Winner?
By R PRIUS
As I recall this book was categorized as CANCER, I believe it might be more aptly described as science based non-fiction. In the last two decades I've seen occasional news items alluding to human cells taken from a black woman in the 1950's that have been replicated millions of times. The cells are referred to as HeLa and on the face of it I wouldn't have thought there was much of a story behind the extraction of these cells and their use by the biomed industry. However, this book dispells that rather naive assumption completely and puts a name and a face, a family, and a story behind the contents of many petri dishes and slides. THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS explains how the cells were obtained, replicated, distributed, and used without informed consent of the owner and family by John Hopkins and how they benefitted mankind w/o compensation to the family. Author Skloot tells the story of a family victimized by socioeconomic conditions and racism that can't get fundamental things like health coverage while these cells make a lot of money for the health establishment. It is a disturbing read that will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. It may also make the reader take a long hard look at the need for standardized health care in our society among many other things.
The one thing that I found fascinating about this book is how Skloot managed to take a generally dry topic that might have been addressed in a scientific textbook and humanized it on a very personal level by developing a close relationship with Henrietta's family. The input received from the family took this book to a higher level and made it a very personsl story. From my perspective, it was very hard not to get involved with the Lacks family and not feel their sense of betrayal and loss.

An approach to music from the dancer's viewpoint, this book offers a two-part exploration of music as it relates to dance, beginning with an introduction to aspects of musicality that dancers—and other music lovers—can explore and put into practice immediately.

Very helpful
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
This book, written for the aspiring professional dancer and choreographer, can also be read profitably by anyone interested in dance. The goal of the book is to get dancers to improve their listening skills and gain a broader understanding of musical concepts and notation. Most importantly, it encourages the dancer to explore new ideas connecting movement with sound. The author recognizes however that dance need not always been done to music, citing the great Doris Humphrey's "Water Study" as an example.
The book is very insightful and has much to say about the relation between dance and music. In attempting to define "musicality" the author emphasizes the enumerable different ways that music and movement can be related. Movement need not be done "with the music", it may be contrary to the music, and act "against" it. She details how choreographers view music and its use in dance and in dance class. Assignments are given at the end of each chapter to illustrate and extend the main points.
Body percussion is introduced as a tool to understand musical percussion patterns as actually done via instruments. The author emphasizes that dancers can improvise on the spot just like most drummers do.
The difference between dancer's counts and musician's counts are discussed, and dancers must learn to do both, according to the author. She draws on the knowledge and experience of some of the eminent choreographerrs on notions of musicality, counting, and how the dancer should relate to music. Choreographers are encouraged to collaborate with musicians and the author details the methods of collaboration. Interestingly, one of these is for the choreographer to put together the movement and videotape it, letting the composer have complete freedom to choose the music. The collaboration between Martha Graham, Louis Horst, and Erick Hawkins is discussed in detail as an example of a very successful collaboration.
The chapter entitled "Sounds and Silences" emphasizes the importance of silent breaks in music. Balanchine's use of Stravinsky is quoted as an example of the unique use of silence in dance. A very brief discussion of the physics of sound is given.
Good technical overviews of music dynamics and timing are given in the book, and the author is very aware of the physical effects of sound that must be dealt with in giving a performance in a large auditorium. The terminology of music dynamics is defined in detail, as well as the notion of attack and decay, with the latter being described in physics terms. A very good overview is given of string articulations and dynamic accents. The use of the metronome to keep time is discussed and the author details time signatures, bar lines, and measures. By far the most important discussion of this part is the one on syncopation, for this can be exploited very imaginatively by the dancer.
Rhythmic patterns are discussed using graphical methods, and the notion of polyrhythm, where more than one rhythmic pattern is occurring at the same time, is discussed. A lengthy list is given of the more popular social dance rhythms.
The notion of pitch is also related to the physics of sound along with consonance and dissonance. The different types of scales, namely diatonic, pentatonic, and whole-tone, are discussed briefly with short musical scores given as examples.
Harmony is defined as a "vertical dimension" in music, i.e. the use of simultaneous basic scale pitches. The circle of fifths is discussed also in a section on tonality. Such technical considerations in music are geared primarily to the choreographer reader, particularly the discussions on timbre and score reading. The author also is careful to discuss non-Western musical constructions, all in relation to dance forms. One good example of this is the discussion on the Raga and Tala classical Indian procedures. There is also a brief discussion of more "exotic" phrasing structures such as 7/8 and 18/8 meters. In addition, the author gives a thorough treatment of sectional forms in dance, the AABB, ABA, AABBCCAB, etc. A list of "10 commandments" for communicating with musicians in class and rehearsal is given.

Helping Dancers to Understand Music
By Mary F. Whipp
I am using this book as a text in my Rhythmic Analysis class for dance majors at ULL. It has an accessible approach to learning about music, does not get too bogged down with music theory, and addresses issues particular to dancers. An excellent book, full of stimulating ideas to use in class.

Not what I was expecting, but still okay...
By slcTY
I agree with the previous reviewer about being slightly disappointed upon opening this book after it arrived today. I have been a long time subscriber to Popular Science and was excited to pre-order this book as soon as I discovered it. However, I thought it would be more detailed and hands on than it really is. It's not as much a guide to 264 amazing DIY projects as it is a catalog of random ideas others have tried. The step by step instruction are very limited and lack details which could be important, especially in some of the more complicated projects. I'll still enjoy the book, but it will be a coffee table book to peruse rather than a guide to creating fun do-it-yourself projects.

Slightly Disappointed
By Kyle
I was slightly disappointed when I received my copy of the book today. As a subscriber of Popular Science I quickly found that many of these projects featured in the book had already been featured in the "You built what?" section of the magazine, and as such, were never intended for the reader to build them, but simply to showcase some impressive DIY projects other people had built. These dont have instructions, just a page telling you about it yet they are still numbered. Because of this, the advertised number of 264 DIY projects becomes a lot smaller in reality.

On top of that, the projects that do have instructions, usually contain 1 picture and some brief text about how to make what's in that picture. Overall, I was expecting a book that gave some walkthroughs on how to build these hacks step by step. If that's what you are looking for, just check the internet.

While entertaining, this book is good for giving you ideas of what to do, just not the best at actually telling you how to do it.

Not worth it at all
By LHN
I really thought it would be a fun book to build or try a few things out, but almost all the hacks were dumb (use condoms to waterproof your camera?), needed tools or materials that are not common (you need a table saw and a special blade to cut glass - sure, we all have that handy, or I'll just run right out and spend $500.00), or just really dumb (stuff newspaper into your jacket to stay warm - that's a hack?)

Sorry, but the book is a huge waste of money. I spent 30 minutes, found nothing worth doing and donated it. And feel bad about donating it.

The Enduring Shore: A History of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket, by Paul Schneider

Even before the Pilgrims landed in 1620, Cape Cod and its islands promised paradise to visitors, both native and European. In Paul Schneider's sure hands, the story of this waterland created by glaciers and refined by storms and tides -- and of its varied inhabitants -- becomes an irresistible biography of a place.

Cape Cod's Great Beach, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket are romantic stops on Schneider's roughly chronological human and natural history. His book is a lucid and compelling collage of seaside ecology, Indians and colonists, religion and revolution, shipwrecks and hurricanes, whalers and vengeful sperm whales, glorious clipper ships and today's beautiful but threatened beaches. Schneider's superb eye for story and detail illuminates both history and landscape. A wonderful introduction, it will also appeal to the millions of people who already have warm associations with these magical places.

From Publishers Weekly
Billed as the first history of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Elizabeth Islands in 50 years, this animated if loosely organized book blends stories of the region's rich heritage with tales of the author's adventures kayaking the local current-riven waters. A Vineyard resident himself, Schneider begins by describing the culture of the area's Nauset and Wampanoag Indians, noting that they had 125 years of contact with adventurous Europeans before the Mayflower's Pilgrims clambered ashore in Provincetown Harbor in 1620. Schneider identifies the geological machinations of the last ice age, which engulfed the northern half of the continent and sculpted the cape, islands and shoals he clearly loves. He retells the tragedy of the whaleship Essex as he juggles his way through New England's whaling heyday. More contemporary topics--such as the current milieus of the various communities and the ecological ravages of DDT in the 1960s--also emerge and recede in an energetic whirl of information. But Schneider's method is more enthusiastic than rigorous, often clouding the chronology of events. Though his literary prose can be engaging, some readers may tire of his rambling. A history of place is especially prone to fragmentation, and this talented writer has allowed his book to succumb to that weakness. (May)

From Booklist
Cape Cod, and its associated islands, is a storied seascape that has seen come and go the Wampanoag people, the Pilgrims, the whalers. The summer residents now seem a stable presence, but their day, too, will pass when their real estate washes away in a few hundred or few thousand years. Schneider reports on the various inhabitants by kayaking about the sounds, bays, and harbors of the area and by recasting for general interests the voluminous oeuvre on local history. Unlimbering first a natural history of the glaciers that created Cape Cod, Schneider proceeds to the human history, the recorded portion of which began with William Bradford's religious sect. They arrived to a land depopulated by a plague. With the survivors, led by the Wampanoag natives, Bradford arranged a peace that held until King Philip's War of 1675. Schneider freshens these chapters of history with a meditative mix about landscape, history, and people. Despite its encrustations of modern amenities, the Cape Cod region remains an enchanting one, according to Schneider's admiring salute. Gilbert Taylor

Finally a readable book for local history
By Seano
The amazing deluge of tourism each summer truly ignores the elaborate history of some of New England's most beautiful coastline. For many of us who live or travel there when time and traffic allow there is this fine book to fill in the grey areas.
Unfortunately, regional history is not as popular to most readers as a spy novel or biography. This book bounces between the author's journeys in Kayak along the islands and coastline and the chronological history of travellers and settlers to the coast. There are humorous accounts of indian encounters, misguided settlers and an all too unpleasant tale of life aboard the Mayflower. Not all as we had once been told in grammar school.
The endnotes are substantial and the book can at times seem more academic than entertaining. However, I passed this on to two friends and we have laughed and shared our favorite stories over beverages. A good book and a nice read.

Wood-slat-porch-with-a-weather-beaten-chair reading
By Binyamin
The romantic relationship between people and the land under their feet dates back, as the name suggests, to the Romantics of the 19th century. It was a relationship born of the truth that absence makes the heart grow fonder -- as cities grew, man longed for a natural world that was no longer readily at hand. And Cape Cod, that barren, sandy strip the Pilgrims had fled as soon as practicable, became a summer destination of choice for well-to-do New Englanders.
Paul Schneider's The Enduring Shore is the latest tribute to the Cape from one of its inhabitants-by-choice. And, in keeping with the long tradition of such works, it proclaims two truths: things used to be better, but the charms of the Cape endure all the same.
It is an eminently enjoyable fiction, this pretense that the Cape has always and will ever endure. And Schneider is a past master of the romantic form, sweeping the reader along with a well-crafted mix of local color, geographic history, and maybe-true legends. It is, in sum, wonderful summer reading, particularly for those who have themselves long felt some measure of love for the Cape.
For those who find they have enjoyed Schneider's book, I would recommend also Diana Muir's Reflections in Bullough's Pond, which does for New England as a whole what Schneider has done for the Cape in particular.
Romantic times and sunny days, after all, call for remembrance of things past, with a smile.

A brilliant book and fun to read
By A Customer
I am a person who has to be "grabbed" and held by a book, or my life takes over and the book gets lost. Paul Schneider's book not only grabs you, it sings to you. It's more than a history; it's a love song to sea and land, and to the weird and complicated people who have made their lives on and out of Cape Cod and the Islands. What I love most about this book is how it goes into history and out again into the landscape. It allows me to be, in my time, intimate with the wind and waves. Schneider is a very funny writer -- the prose keeps you reading at a good clip. But he's also a poet. This book covers the range of emotions and human interest, it holds you with its passion and its love for the land.

Excellent adventure!
By Richard
This novel is very typical of Haggard's adventure stories. This one in particular somewhat reminded me of "Montezuma's Daughter"... It was a story of an extraordinarily beautiful Indian princess and a white Englishman who fall in love and who must suffer through much because of their deep feelings for one another. The story is told by Ignation (an Indian) who was the friend of both the white man and his beloved Maya. Most of the later part of the novel takes place in the great City of the Heart which is beautiful and yet venomous and deadly... Of course there are "bad men" and "bad women" who do not fully understand the great love of Maya and James (the princess and her white men) and without whom the story would have no conflict or much of a plot... :) So do read the book. It is neither essential to life nor does it provoke any great thoughts or ideas, but nonetheless it is very enjoyable and relaxing.

Aztec Two-Step
By s.ferber
Although I had previously read and hugely enjoyed no fewer than 40 novels by H. Rider Haggard, I yet felt a trifle nervous before beginning the author's "Heart of the World." I had recently finished Haggard's truly excellent novel of 1893, "Montezuma's Daughter"--a novel that deals with the downfall of the Aztec empire in the early 16th century--and was concerned that "Heart of the World," which I knew to be still another story dealing with the Aztecs, would necessarily be repetitive. As it turns out, however, I needn't have worried. Despite the Aztec backdrop, the two novels are as dissimilar as can be; whereas the first deals with an Englishman witnessing the Indian conflicts with Cortes from 1519-1521 and the fall of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, "HOTW" takes place a good three centuries later. Written by Haggard from November 1893-February 1894, the novel was serialized in "Pearson's Weekly" and later published in book form in March 1896. The novel was Haggard's 18th, out of an eventual 58, and following as it did three of the author's greatest creations--"Nada the Lily," "Montezuma's Daughter" and "The People of the Mist"--demonstrated that H. Rider was very much near the top of his game during this period, a full decade after coming out with the phenomenally popular "King Solomon's Mines," "Allan Quatermain" and "She."

"HOTW" takes the form of a manuscript written by the Mexican Indian Don Ignatio, close to the end of his 62 years. In it, he tells of the great adventure that he'd had in the mid-19th century, alongside the English miner James Strickland. The lineal descendant of Guatemoc, last of the Aztec emperors, Ignatio has dedicated his life to the fulfillment of a dream: the unification of the Mexican peoples and the ouster of the Spanish influence. Ultimately, the pair comes in contact with Zibalbay, head priest and ruler of the People of the Heart--who dwell in the legendary Lost City of Gold--along with his beautiful daughter, Maya. As it turns out, Zibalbay's goals are the same as Ignatio's, and so the four travel to the lost city, the titular Heart of the World, encountering many hardships on the trail. But once arrived at the legendary island city (which the reader infers is somewhere beyond the Guatemalan border), their troubles are only beginning, as politics and a love triangle go a long way in destroying their cherished plans....

Longtime readers of Haggard will not be surprised to learn what an incredibly action-packed and exciting book "HOTW" is. Before our adventurers even arrive at the lost city, Haggard has treated us to a mine cave-in, a gun battle with a band of killers, the mother of all storms at sea, a shipwreck (a shipwreck had already been featured in Haggard's 1888 novel "Mr. Meeson's Will" and in "Montezuma's Daughter," and would also figure largely in later novels such as 1906's "Benita" and 1929's "Mary of Marion Isle"), a swordfight, a run-in with nasty father and son smugglers, a battle on top of a ruined jungle pyramid, an almost lethal snakebite, and a trek across both desert and mountains. Haggard throws an enormous lot into his book to please the reader, and his four main characters are an interesting bunch. Ignatio, our narrator, is especially likable, being at once humble, shrewd, and dedicated to his cause, while Strickland comes across as a typically good-hearted, brave and handsome Englishman; the sort that the author loved to depict, and very much in the Leo Vincey mold, from "She." Zibalbay strongly resembles many former and future white-bearded patriarch figures in the Haggard pantheon (I am thinking most especially of Oro, in the 1919 novel "When the World Shook"), while Maya must be added to the very long list of Haggardian women who have sacrificed all for love. (It is remarkable what a lengthy roster of strong female characters Haggard managed to amass over the course of his career; I can think of no author, offhand, who even comes close.) The author treats his readers to detailed descriptions of his Heart of the World, both physical descriptions and details about the people's lives, customs and religion, and it is all fairly fascinating stuff. As always, Haggard's ruminations on various matters creep into his book; his thoughts regarding death, as expressed via Ignatio, are very moving indeed. (Haggard had lost his son, "Jock," two years before writing this book.) "HOTW" may be a touch less exciting than "Montezuma's Daughter," a bit less crammed with incident, and lacks a strong central villain on the order of the earlier book's Juan de Garcia (although there ARE minor rogues and badmen aplenty). Still, it is a highly satisfying creation, sure to provide many nights of excitement; a true page-turner, and all that. Ignatio, before setting down his tale, tells us "I fear that my skill in writing is small." Humble as always, the old Indian was wrong in this regard. It turns out that he could spin a tale alongside the best of them!
