Oh wow Nancy Adams! (Some spoilers)

I love how Nancy Adams gives a different perspective on a rich family. I love the fact that Nate is down to earth and easy to get along with. He isn't snobby (which you expect from rich people) and he doesn't care that he has a ton of money.
I also love the character development and how well they build a relationship. Some things were expected like when they fell in love but others were not when Nate's father has a heart attack.
The stories are wonderfully written and I enjoy them every time I read them (yes I'be read these books more than once!)
What I can say is for Nancy to keep writing amazing book and from her unique point of view. It is refreshing and just what we need in this day and age!

Nancy Adams has created a true winner with this series. Be sure to start from the beginning. A trying but beautiful love story.

You are a genuine priceless writer. What a gift you have! I didn't expect half the twists and turns you provided, but you sure put them together in a very enjoyable format. Katelynn and Nate are made for each other. It was great the way you started out this book, giving a refresher what went on before, in a well written opening. Reading the final book was a well deserved ending after the trials and tribulations Katelynn and Nate went through. To the new reader, be sure to read the first 5 books to appreciate the entire story line.

Well this series was cute, it was just not for my taste. It went way to fast and I felt like a 16 year old wrote it. It was about this 22 year old named Katelynn, and she just finished college and wants to start her career, she doesn't know where to start but a new store is opening in her home town called Nates. So she applies and gets hired on the spot. Nate the owner's son is training her and the fall in love with training with each other. It was kind of boring but way to fast, like one day she starts training and the next they are in love. Some of it was very fake. They have all these crazy insane things happening and NO problems to get out of the trouble, some take time but it's not a story I would want to ever read again. Like how is this 28 year old Billionaire still a virgin, in today's world that chance is one in a few billion. I know it was fiction but it just was awful. I hate to critisize this book but I can't help it. I would let my teenager read it. But not for an adult. Some of Katelynn's pregnancy was extremely unrealistic. She knew right away but yet it was so far off and then the whole entire thing was so awful. Like how can a town be created in a few months? I just didn't see it happening. It was just way to fake. I love fiction but when it is so unrealistic it's quite insane. When you are reading you want to relate to the books and the characters and fall in love with them, while I did like them I think this whole series was way to rushed and not studied enough to be accurately fiction, it's dream on fiction.

Just wonderful!

I have been counting down the days for this book and I definitely didn't waste my time reading it. First, it was longer than previous books, more detail and more personality.

Star and Jazin are a wonderful couple, he's an alpha male who is in for a very rude awakening. Star is small but she's mighty and he needs to remember that she can take care of herself. With the addition of Madas and his two captains, and a new cast of characters, this is setting up to become a really great series.

I just love her books! Fantastic read!

Epic Sci Fi Series

River, Star, and Jo were abducted by aliens. Each girl if finding out that their abductors are their soul mates who want nothing more than to claim their fragile Earth mates and keep them safe and protected in the lap of luxury for the rest of their lives
This is book 2 featuring the petite yet big hearted Star. Being smaller than most people she has learned to stand up for herself and disprove those who think that small means fragile, demure, and/or passive. Even if it takes saving her big bad mate Jazim to prove it.

If it were possible to give this book ten stars I would. It's a contemporary sci fi humorous adventure book that includes an erotic romance between Star and Jazim (thanks again Amazon for taking out tags). It has aliens who are big & bad with alpha personalities who find their mates and want to protect and lap all the creature comforts that they can so the girls know they are loved yet are not put into danger. In this book though the alien needs to be rescued as HE is kidnapped and about to die.

Along the way Star makes new friends includes a reptilian female Madas (who I absolutely love to pieces), Gril (I so want to see him taken down a notch or two), Jarmen (stole my heart and affection), Armet, and Dakar. Each personality adds a new dimension to this book that gives life to this fictional world the author has created. There are other characters who breath life into this story but I'll refrain from mentioning them as you'd loose the fun and surprises if I listed them. Viva Le France!!!!!

wonderful fantasy sci fi read that has some erotic scenes that are downright steamy but made me a fan because of it's barbarian mentality alpha alien who get taken down by one kick ass Earth female.

Ok sequel but first is better

I read River's Run and enjoyed it for the most part, so was looking forward to Star's story. It started out quite good with lots of action and I was glad the author didn't rehash the plot as she did in the Dragon Lord series. Star was very feisty, but sometimes I think both she and the Kassian people expected more out of her than she should have been capable of. Seriously, she is a circus performer (high wire) but is willing and able to kill seasoned warriors? At least with River, she had extensive skill with knives. It just became to unbelievable, then downright silly when she was kidnapped and taken aboard the freighter by inept Frenchmen. Really?? I also wish the men would have been stronger. They too are seasoned warriors who took shit from no one, yet these three women ran circles around them. IT just didn't seem plausible. I think I will skip Jo's story, as the idea of an entire circus traveling to the Kassian world seems downright ridiculous and from the bit at the end of Star's story, that might come to pass. I enjoy series, but the later ones have to be as good as the first to keep my interest.

In these essays, Nussbaum (Ernst Freund Professor of Law and Ethics, Univ. of Chicago) conceptualizes a "feminism that is internationalist, humanist, liberal, concerned with the social shaping of preference and desire, and concerned with sympathetic understanding." Drawing on extensive fieldwork with an international agency affiliated with the United Nations, she offers compelling examples to illustrate her philosophical arguments about issues such as international women's human rights and cultural universalism. Each of the 15 essays is rigorously argued and challenges existing mindsets. For example, in "Taking Money for Bodily Services," Nussbaum observes that "we all do things with parts of our bodies, for which we receive a wage in return" and suggests that the stigmatization of prostitution is based more on class prejudice and gender stereotypes than on rational defenses. Martha Nussbaum has written other works, focusing on philosophy, ancient Greek and Roman works, feminism, and politics (Nussbaum, 1999). Martha is an American philosopher and is a professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago (Nussbaum, 2004). She has also written other works such as Cultivating Humanity, Hiding from Humanity and Frontiers of Justice (Nussbaum, 2004). Martha is also very prestigious in holding 50 honorary degrees in colleges and universities in the Untied States as well as Asia, Africa, and Europe (Nussbaum, 2004). She also has been awarded several writing and recognition awards (Nussbaum, 2004). She demonstrates and go into detail on how sex has the ability to define the human race. She proposes functional freedoms, or central human capabilities, as a rubric of social justice. She obtained her information from Catharine MacKinnon's, Kathryn Trevenen, and Andrea Dworkin. The attended audience for this book is anyone who is interested in sex and the meaning behind it. In my personal opinion I would deem this book a success, the author gets her points across, and the book is very interesting because it is so intimate.

A Hope For Global Justice

This is what all philosophy should be--tightly argued, clearly written, and deeply moving. Nussbaum (and Amartya Sen's) capabilities approach offers promise in taking on problems of distributive justice and human rights. Nussbaum deserves praise for unflinchingly shining the moral spotlight upon all institutions--from the family to the nation-state--a project unsatisfactorily handled by some brands of liberalism. I eagerly await Nussbaum's next book.

Just To Be Fair

I decided to write this review just to be fair to anyone who is thinking about reading this book. I say this because the reviews I read of the book that were posted were severely misleading and unnecessarily harsh. So I will first of all respond to some of the misguided criticisms of the book that you will find in the other reviews, and then present my view on the book. First of all, no the author does not discuss discrimination against children or the elderly. Why would this make her book bad? She is dealing with SPECIFIC issues, like issues of justice relating to gender and sexual orientation. These issues are certainly large enough in scope and importance to justify their own treatment in a book, there is no reason why a discussion of every conceivable type of discrimination should also be included. The issues of discrimination against the young, the elderly, and the religious are important, but there are numerous books out there on those issues if someone wants to read them. It is unfair to say that this particular book should have to address them, it already runs 550 or so pages, that should be enough.
Also, someone complained that the author takes a purely male - centered perspective on the issues, and thus could not possibly be a feminist. I must confess I don't think you honestly read the book if you think that. She gives REASONS as to why her perspective is right and is feminist as well. There is no reason why rationality is a peculiarly male preoccupation, and I think that to intonate that is sexist in and of itself, because the conclusion seems to be that women are not reasoned creatures like men are, and that is a view women have been struggling against for centuries. Basically, the important thing is that there can be disagreement about the issue of how important rationality is to ethics, and that is certainly legitimate, but it is unfair and nothing more than ad hominem argumentation to say that someone cannot dispute the supposition that rationality is not important to ethics and still remain an important philosopher or feminist.
Finally, someone complained that this book is not "philosophy," because it pertains to political and social issues and is not well argued. The book is obviously well reasoned, and Nussbaum is an eminently respected philosopher. More importantly though, if philosophers don't deal with political and social issues, who should? Should we leave that up to politicians, because they obviously care and know about the issues? It seems to me that someone should do some serious thinking about political issues, and I see no reason why it should not be philosophers, who generally have a reputation for clarity and calm rationality. This is nothing more than someone's bias about what is most important for philosophers to discuss, and you can have your bias, that is fine, but you shouldn't tell people not to read this book because you don't like the subject matter. If anything, that should cause you to NOT review the book, because you should be uninterested in the subject matter.
In sum, this book was very well and calmly argued, unlike the reviews of it posted here. Nussbaum does not bow down to current fads like cultural and ethical relativism, or a care - centered feminist ethics. I thought when reading it that this might cause some controversy and anger, but I anticipated nothing like what I have seen in these reviews. She sheds light on important issues of global and national policy, and does so without abandoning reasoned argumentation, which if nothing else seems to be what philosophy should be about. Beyond making an excellent contribution to metaethics and international development policy, she has wonderful essays about the role of retribution in the law and what we can glean philosophically from important works of literature, for example there is an essay on the work of Virginia Wolf. I would recommend this book to you if you would like a well - rounded introduction to the thought of one of the most important philosophers of our time, and if you are interested in any of the issues I just mentioned.

Chaos in science has always been a fascinating realm since it challenges the usual scientific approach of reductionism. While carefully distinguishing between complexity, holism, randomness, incompleteness, nondeterminism and stochastic behaviour the authors show that, although many aspects of chaos have been phenomenologically understood, most of its defining principles are still difficult to grasp and formulate. Demonstrating that chaos escapes all traditional methods of description, the authors set out to find new methods to deal with this phenomenon and illustrate their constructive approach with many examples from physics, biology and information technology. While maintaining a high level of rigour, an overly complicated mathematical apparatus is avoided in order to make this book accessible, beyond the specialist level, to a wider interdisciplinary readership.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC - intense, addictive & emotional

Thank you Judy from Random House Australia for inviting me to read this fabulous debut. Claire Kells has created one amazing New Adult romance. Her characters are complex and the topic is no easy subject to write about or read for that matter, PTSD is a taboo subject really, but the realism Ms Kells inflicts in her book places you right in the heart of Avery. The details of the plane crash were meticulous and with so many happening in real life these days, it brings to the forefront the topic of locator beacons. I really loved the scene when the plane was falling between Colin and Avery, it was very sweet and inspiring. Colin is such a beautiful guy that is totally misunderstood, but he is my hero.

Avery Delacorte is a nineteen year old swimmer. She’s been in the pool since the age of three and is the youngest of four children. Her three older brothers are in the spotlight themselves, two being baseball superstars and one in Hollywood. Avery had moved across the country to be part of the best college swim team and to escape expectations from her family.

Avery became a different person when she moved, popular and social and a much loved boyfriend that’s also on the swim team, Lee. Her first week as a freshman and the first person she notices in the pool is Colin Shea. His butterfly was powerful and he stands out against all the others in the pool. He was clearly born to be a swimmer and is being called the next Michael Phelps.

Now a sophomore and Avery is heading home for the holidays. Colin and Phil Markey (also on the team) are on the same flight. Colin is a massive muscular guy and ends up sitting next to Avery, though she isn’t happy about it; she has been avoiding him since she started college. Anyway, Avery dozes off, it’s a six hour flight after all, but is suddenly awoken with screams and panic.

Colin is calm and confident, he takes Avery’s hand and tells her “we’re going to make it, Avery” they weren’t going to die. How does he stay so calm is such chaos? As they fall from the sky, Colin and Avery look at each and then “don’t be afraid” BANG CRASH!

Will they be rescued? How will they survive in a wilderness that’s covered in snow? Will they give in to their true feelings? What will happen if they return?

The intense scenes in the wilderness, the survival skills that Avery learnt from her father and the love she discovers are all incredible in itself. But with the addition of the other elements about her brother’s, her family life and Colin revealing his, adds to one marvellous debut. Ms Kells is now certainly a favourite of mine and I cannot wait to read what she creates next.

A thoroughly engrossing book

We all know the statistics about air travel. How it’s so much safer than driving a car. How the number of people dying in plane crashes grows smaller every year, while the number of people who survive them grows larger. How, despite recent news, plane travel continues to get safer and safer every year. Yet who among us does not squeeze the arm rest just a little tighter during take-off and landing? Driving a car at least provides an illusion of being in control. There’s no such illusion strapped into a plane seat.

For Avery Delacorte, the protagonist of Claire Kells’ Girl Underwater, the airplane that takes her and her college swim teammates, Phil and Colin, from their California school to their hometowns near Boston, only represents the six hours in between her and reuniting with her family for Thanksgiving. Sophomore Avery finds Colin, a powerful senior, particularly intimidating, and is dismayed when he plops down on the seat next to her. But when the flight goes down somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, she’s glad that calm, strong Colin was her seatmate. Avery and Colin help three small boys out of the plane; Colin carries an unconscious pregnant woman on his shoulder. They’re the only survivors, and they watch the plane sink into an enormous, cold lake. Luggage floats nearby, but the lake is cold and the swimmers are hurt. They’re in the middle of nowhere and winter is coming. How will they survive?

While structured differently, Girl Underwater reminded me a lot of Tracey Garvis-Graves’ novel On the Island, as both books made me think about how long I’d survive in such conditions. Maybe about eight hours. I don’t know how to make a fire from two sticks, or stitch a wound together, or which mushrooms are safe to eat. Books like these are not only entertaining, they’re survival guides.

But structure is key in differentiating these two books. While On the Island (soon to be a major motion picture!) was told in a linear fashion that kept readers wondering if there would ever be an "Off the Island," Girl Underwater alternates between the plane crash and its immediate aftermath with Avery’s story a month later, as she tries to physical and mentally recover. The boys are hospitalized but okay, while Colin is still in critical condition and being transferred to a hospital closer to his home.

As this structure reveals itself within the first few chapters, I’m not giving anything away by describing it. I did, however, wonder why author Kells chose to tell the story this way. As it’s told from Avery’s first person point of view, it seems obvious that all five crash survivors go on to survive their five-day stranding. The mystery then boils down to simpler questions about why Avery doesn’t want to see the boys or Colin again. What exactly happened while they were stranded? Why does she feel so guilty? What is she hiding?

Girl Underwater is a thoroughly engrossing book. The scenes with the five stranded in the snowy Rocky mountains are so well-written, I was completely transported to the setting. However, the scenes of Avery coping after her rescue are sometimes confusing when they should have been mysterious. There are plot holes and inconsistencies that made me wish that such a wonderful book had had a better editor. And while I had no trouble believing that Avery’s surgeon father would have taught her basic – even advanced – life-saving medical techniques, it was too much that he’d taught her advanced survival skills as well. As the Church Lady on Saturday Night Live used to say, "how convenient." Still, these problems only slightly diminished my enjoyment of the book. Despite these flaws, it’s “unputdownable.”

Many readers take up the hobby to be transported to happier, more romantic places – Elizabethan England, high school romance. Then there are those of us who read to go to those bad places – haunted houses, war, desert islands, plane crash aftermath. These books show that not only can man triumph over nature’s worse impulses, we can also triumph over our own.

Read this book, unless you don't like to have fun.

This book is a fun read, and Claire Kells has a remarkable knack for weaving a story of adventure, survival, love, and anguish.

This book will obviously be compared to the Twilight and Hunger Games series. They all feature a female lead character caught between two romantic interests, struggling with both internal and external conflicts and threats to their survival. They're also fun stories that make great reads. Girl Underwater breaks from the other two in some important ways.

First, it's realistic. There's no sci-fi creatures or illogical dystopian future. The scenario could actually happen. This puts a good amount more weight on the author's shoulders to keep things credible, and Kells delivers. She doesn't invent a new order of beings or silly technology to get out of a plot hole. Secondly, the heroine isn't just a confused teenager but a competitive athlete and interesting girl. She's someone young people can look up to and older people can hope to see in their kids. She has her flaws but she also has a multitude of strengths that make you appreciate the depth of her character.

Hollywood execs: buy the rights now. This book would make a great film. Readers: Snatch this book up and have fun with it. Then anxiously wait for the followup. There could be a sequel, but I'd much rather see what else Ms. Kells can imagine. I can imagine that this could be a sleeper hit that everyone comes back to read after the second or third book smashes records. So get in on the ground floor of this remarkable author's storytelling. People who don't like to have fun: you need not apply.

If you re at all interested in Google BigQuery, this is an excellent book. The descriptions and sample code are clear and easy to understand, and the fact the authors are so involved with the project means they include insights into why things were designed in that particular way. There are useful descriptions of the differences between BigQuery and other tools such as MapReduce, and overall you ll come out with a much clearer view of the big data scene right now, and how everything fits together. Great introduction and explanation to more than just BigQuery

As someone who needed to get up-to-speed on BigQuery in a hurry, this book was exactly what I needed. It's comprehensive and detailed, yet still a very easy read. The authors do a great job of exposing and building knowledge in a very logical order, giving quick explanations/refreshers on related technology along the way.

The book is written in a professional and engaging style that isn't at all dry. Highly recommended for those, like me, who are looking to really understand this product, usage, and context.

Excellent guide for both big data analysis with BigQuery and the architecture of big data systems

This book is easy to read, providing a great description of BigQuery with concrete examples. It also provides throughout the text an overview of multiple big data systems, not just BigQuery, in a very natural and readable manner. Setup and examples are logically structured, starting with the basics such as environment setup and the core API along with a brief introduction to the web interface. Examples are primarily written in Python with some Java sprinkled throughout for completeness. There's clear descriptions of the differences between BigQuery syntax and standard SQL, comprehensive API examples and the current capabilities of the platform.

One of the more interesting and useful pieces is found halfway through the book once the basics have been covered. The authors demonstrate how BigQuery can integrate in to a larger project for recording and analyzing data, using an Android client, Google App Engine and a reporting interface to give a nice example of an end-to-end implementation.

What really sets this book apart however is the descriptions and reasoning given throughout the book on why various architectural decisions were made. It is made very clear how BigQuery differs from other big data technology stacks such as MapReduce, RedShift and others, often delving in to specific design descriptions for comparison. Having this context allows the user to really understand how the system fits together, giving all the tools required to get the most out of BigQuery.
