This is the most practical book on sleep I have seen (and I have read many).
It is literally a step-by-step guide, reads smoothly and it just all makes sense.
There are 3 steps.
The first step we needed to do is getting everything ready (it is called "setting the stage" in the book). Before I started I thought I was gonna be able to skip this one. I thought I had everything set up right ... well I was wrong.
It's a long list but one example for us was the bedtime routine. We had one and thought it was good. But it turned out to be too long, too exciting and it was just not giving the right signals to my little girl. Getting the temperature right was another big one for us, I never realized it could have such an effect. And I found out how to "collect" myself and how that has an impact too.
Step 2 ("know your baby's self soothing age") is spot on. What I saw described as typical for my daughter's age, is exactly what we had been going through. I now know why the self settling wasn't happening and I collected the plan of what we could do.
This "what to do" was Step 3, the actual techniques. We needed the ones to wean from nursing to sleep, and the one to transition from our bed to her own cot. But there's also the weaning from holding, from sleeping in the swing or stroller or so, and when you always need to sit in.
Anyway, I'm proud to say that it worked. We can now put our daughter down, she babbles for a few minutes and then she's off to sleep ...
It took us 3 weeks though, and patience, so I should say that if you are looking for a self-soothing-TONIGHT method, this is not it. (None of those "quick ones" worked for us by the way).
I did find the book a bit short when I first got it, but now I know that it has everything in there, just no extra page-fillers.
If it hadn't been for this book, we would still spend our evenings holding our little girl, hoping that she'd finally sleep (and not wake up screaming the second we put her down). Now we actually have the evening to US, which is great. So I have to give this one 5 stars.

Don't skip this "little" guide ... it's the kind you would regret not getting ...
Doing the 3 steps has been so helpful for us. Firstly to understand what we were doing wrong (silly "little" things like putting him to bed way too late because I thought he wasn't tired ...) but most of all we got very precise instructions for what to do and when.
We did the specific techniques for our son's issue and that was all it took. I also read the rest of the book, and I recommend everyone does that because there are lots of extra tips in every part.
Our problem was that we had to always hold him until he slept really deeply before we could put him in the crib (the book also has techniques for when you feed them to sleep, or on you/in your bed, or in the stroller only).
Everyone told me I would have to let him cry until he stopped doing that but I just couldn't bear him crying and screaming like that :( So I'm glad I found this and we managed to go through it all without him every crying once.
You have to know that it is not an "overnight" solution, but that's not the promise of it either, you know beforehand that it will take some time. But it makes sense to go little step by little step, without forcing, until baby gets it.
We started seeing improvements after one week, fully independent bedtimes by 2,5 weeks and now, almost 4 months later, all is still going well. We even made it through 2 painful teething phases and one bad cold without sleeping problems.
Not sure what more to write ... I simply recommend this book to every parent, grandparent or carer who wants a realistic way to get their babies to go to sleep independently.

The very best I've read

I've read lots of baby sleep books and this is the one that gave me faith again! It is short (thank you), straightforward, effective.
I was really surprised that there were lots of thingsI didn't think of/read before and that were really good. I thought by now I had read it all! Of course you have the usual "not too tired, bedtime routine, lovey" tips but even that's better explained than in other books.
There is no filling, no self-congratulatory anecdotes from the author or endless list of credentials as intro, no guilt trip, no CIO... yes, sounds refreshing, doesn't it.
A good example is how to wean baby from falling asleep with the nipple/bottle/pacifier in mouth and (catch phrase coming up) putting him/her to sleep awake. It is easier and better than Pantley's much-overblown "Gentle Removal Plan" (and without the fuss)!
I've started 2 days ago and it's obvious it is making a positive difference. I will update my review later (fingers crossed).
Just one thing that didn't bother me but might annoy other readers : I'm not sure if the book is translated from another language - I don't think so - but quite often it seemed to me the written English didn't "flow" and was a bit clumsy, like someone writing in a foreign tongue (like I do!)
