About the Author
George Yancy is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University and Coordinator of the Critical Race Theory Speaker Series. He is the author of Black Bodies, White Gazes: The Continuing Significance of Race, which received an Honorable Mention from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights. He has also edited twelve influential books, three of which have received Choice Awards. He was also recently nominated for the Duquesne University Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship.

Techne of philsophy

Dear Dr. Yancy:
I just completed reading your new book and the related APA Newsletter this afternoon. I found the book extremely interesting and enlightening. I really liked the movie reviews of Avatar and White Chicks. I also liked your construct of the "conception of the opaque white racist."
I also liked how the APA Newsletter on Philosophy and the Black Experience, Volume 12, Number 1, Fall 2012 published 6 philosophers who critiqued your book and your thorough response to your interlocutors. I really did enjoy reading your responses to their critiques. Out of all the APA Newsletters I have read this one I had to keep reading, whenever I got a chance, in order to complete it and reflect upon what I have read. An instructor of African-American Studies is currently reading the book and we have both come to the conclusion that this book should be included in every introductory African-American Studies course.
I am surprised that MSNBC --- either the Al Sharpton show or Melissa Harris Perry or Chris Matthews --- or CNN with Soledad Obrien have not contacted you to come on their show (s) to discuss race.
It is my belief, after reading your book, that AG Eric Holder should just quote Fredrick Douglas whenever he discusses race: use Fredrick Douglas as a footnote for whatever statement he is making pertaining to race.
I also like your use of Parrhisia---fearless speech, in which whites as well as non-whites should use when observing racism by white bodies upon non-white bodies and boldly speaking out against racial, sexual, and gender discrimination: "Look a White!"
This is an excellent example of a contemporary African-American philosopher practicing the techne of philosophy.

Exploring "whiteness" and "blackness"

This book is really a collection of essays, and that means that it is not very well structured. But Yancy is really on to something.

Years ago, when white people at my institution were urging Black colleagues to help us deal with our racism, the response was, "Oh no! It's not our job to straighten you out. Just get together with other White colleagues and deal with it." But of course one of the major results of racism is that the privileged group can never see its privileges. We needed that help. Yancy is devoting his teaching and writing to providing it. Good for him!

The point is that people labeled "White" see themselves as "normal, regular, average"--hence their blindness and complacency about what people in prejudice groups go through. Yancy's chapter on what it feels like to be observed by Whites as a Black male is well worth the price of the book. He shows how racism works--by instinct and without our noticing. "Look, a Black!" "Watch out for him!" He is trying to turn this around for us and his students, making us aware of what is instinctive and unconscious.

Yancy uses a lot of terminology (or jargon!) from literary theory, which will put some people off. I wish he gave us more material from his classroom experiences and less rehashing of Belle Hooks' work. But still, a valuable book.

Fun story.

This was a well written story. I do wish the erotic scenes were a bit more stimulating and also I wish the whole swap could have had a bit more confrontation to it. But, on a whole it was a fun story. And there is scant few stories about female muscle growth and male drain on the net. And Mindi did a good job on the psychological side of the transformation. All in all a nice read and you can tell this was edited, which is always a plus. I guess my big beef with this story is the characters, I didn't like the male protagonist and then when the female came into her own, she was just like how the jerk husband was. But, a little nicer... I would have loved to see the differences fleshed out more. I doubt she would have kept the same social circle. Still as I said it's a fun read.

Lots of talk, very little description of actual sex. I love fem dom & muscle growth, I just didn't see well described sex.

Shrunken & seduced is a great story, this one is a misfire.

Usually, size transfer is really titillating. This story just doesn't hit the mark. Erotica authors: please focus on the actual coitus.

The third edition of this comprehensive collection of oratory through the ages is appropriately edited by former presidential speechwriter Safire—a man who knows firsthand the importance of putting together the right words for the right moment. But many readers will no doubt skip his prefatory lesson in rhetoric and go right to the speeches themselves. The selections range widely through Western history, from Pericles’s funeral oration to fallen Greek soldiers in the Peloponnesian War, to Tony Blair "exhorting his party to fight terrorism." History has yet to pass judgment on the greatness of the most recent speeches included here, but Safire shows a broad-minded, bipartisan inclusiveness in collecting the words of Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, history’s losers (Sen. Robert Taft opposing war crimes trials after WWII) as well as its victors. And several of the speeches he includes deal with politics only indirectly: such as Louis Pasteur’s paean to scientific education, the Dalai Lama’s sermon on the "Philosophy of Compassion" and Salman Rushdie’s description of a life "Trapped inside a Metaphor." This new edition of Safire's book, originally published in 1992, retains all the speeches in the first edition and adds 20 new ones, such as Pope Urban II launching the crusades, Bob Dole remembering Richard Nixon, and Colin Powell on racial hatred. Safire's criteria are subjective?a speech is included if he thinks "it's great"?and the tone of his unhelpful introduction is one of strained cuteness. Most collections of speeches focus narrowly on particular subjects such as American or classical speeches, with few attempting, like Safire's, to cover all times and places. In fact, The Guide to Reference Books lists only one: Brewer's ten-volume World's Best Orations, published in 1901. Not surprisingly, there is virtually no overlap between Brewer's 350 and Safire's 220 selections. Safire's book is not really necessary for libraries owning the first edition, but it is a good addition for those lacking Brewer's or in need of modern speeches. With an excellent index.?Peter A. brilliant compilation and analysis by safire

As a compilation it is probably up there with the classics; it certainly isn't limited by genre, time, space, or ideology. And it has most of the classics, just to make the rhetoric professor comfortable in using it as a sourcebook.

The real gems are safire's comments; they are the most pleasurable parts of the work. His writing is so clear, yet sufficiently nuanced that one can't pin him down as playing favorites even when one knows that he would find the speaker or the speech (or both) completely reprehensible.

See, in particular, his comments to Rabbi Stephen Wise's speech at a Lincoln Memorial ceremony. It is the type of material than one can truly savor and enjoy.

This is the speaker's cook book. Every great speech since the Sermon on the Mount seems to get a listing, each a beautiful little inspirational recipe for our own fumbling, stuttering, trembling efforts. To cap it all, Safire's editorial contribution is brilliant. He follows his hypnotic introduction with concise and balanaced analysis for each speech. If you are looking for something stirring for the Scout jamboree, something special for cousin Harriet's wedding, or that little extra for Pastor William's Sunday service this is the book for you. I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended.

The IB physics bible

This book is probably the best resources you can get for IB physics. It is tailored to the IB syllabus and contains nothing more than what you need for the exam. This book is especially useful if your teacher does not teach, or somehow decides not to teach according to the syllabus. Also, it is a must for people who want to do well but are not willing to read through 500 pages of their textbook before the exam. For me, it certainly contributed to my 7 in physics HL, and I know it is probably go to do the same for you.

I liked it because instead of several paragraphs of essay style writing contained in a regular textbook, this book gives a more concise visual approach and uses many diagrams and boxes with text inside to explain concepts. If you are SL or HL Physics, I strongly recomend this book.

This book is AMAZING

This book is the best thing you could buy for the IB Physics test. It has all the information you need for every single topic. And it goes in order. Nothing is left out. The text looks intimidating at first, but once you start reading and highlighting, it becomes so easy. I used this book to study for my IB physics SL test, and I got a 7. Oh yeah, and for one of my options, I studied a topic my teacher never taught in class. I learned it all myself from the book. So that just goes to show how good it is. I higly recommend this book to anyone that wants to score high on this test. I also bought the IB Biology book, and so far it's helping me a great deal just for tests and quizzes.

I was delighted to discover that the second book had been released, and enjoyed it just as much as the first one. I love the twist that humans are the alien species, but especially I enjoy the dry, ongoing humor. It's both fun reading and enjoyable entertainment. Can't wait for number three. Intensely fun view of an alien war, where humanity is dragged into an alien society's internal conflict, and the aliens find that have brought in far more than they counted on. Much akin to the last star fighter, but on a greater scale.

My 12 month old got this as a newborn gift. She loves shaking the book up and down to make the maraca shake... and has even begun to shake it with the song inside (Row, Row, Row your boat). It is recommended for children over age 3 because of the small parts inside the maraca, only. Otherwise I recommend it even for a younger child!

Leonora Mary Hassal Sansay (b. 1773), also known as Mary Hassal, was born into the American Revolution. She was a personal acquaintance of Vice President Aaron Burr, under President Thomas Jefferson.

In this 1808 book she writes of her experiences and those of others in the French colony of St. Domingo during the 1802-1805 period of the Haitian revolution. It is written as a series of letters to Burr and to a sister while in St. Domingo and also in Cuba and Jamaica. While it contains some fictionalized accounts, it is also includes many references to real life figures and events.

Sansay was one of the earliest US gothic authors, at a time when most others were men. She became noted for creating works that were “something in between romance and history.” Here she writes of trying to find a romantic life amidst a backdrop of poverty, cruelty and the horrors of war. Not all is despair, as she also tells of finding heroism and chivalry amongst the people thrown together during these turbulent times. It should be of interest to both historians and romance fans alike.

A young Frenchman was deeply in love with her daughter, but his fortune had been lost in the general wreck, and he had nothing to offer to the object of his adoration except a heart glowing with tenderness...

He addressed himself to her father, and this father was rich! He lavished on his mistress all the comforts and elegancies of life, yet refused to his family the scantiest pittance! He replied to the proposal that his daughter might marry, but that it was impossible for him to give her a shilling.

Clarissa heard the unfeeling sentence with calm despair. She had just reached the age in which the affections of the heart develope themselves. The beauty of her form was unequalled, and innocence, candour, modesty, generosity, and heroism, were expressed with ineffable grace in every attitude and every feature. Clarissa was adored. Her lover was idolatrous. The woods, the dawning day, the starry heavens, witnessed their mutual vows. The grass pressed by her feet, the air she respired, the shade in which she reposed, were consecrated by her presence.

Her mother marked, with pity, the progress of their mutual passion, which she could not forbid, for her own heart was formed for tenderness, nor could she sanction it, seeing no probability of its being crowned with success. But the happiness of her daughter was her only wish, and moved by her tears, her sighs, and the ardent prayers of her lover, she at length consented to their union. They were married and they were happy. But alas! a few days after their marriage a fever seized Clarissa. The distracted husband flew to her father who refused to send her the least assistance. She languished, and her mother and her husband hung over her in all the bitterness of anguish. The impossibility of paying a physician prevented their calling one, till it was too late, and, ten days after she had become a wife, she expired. I have held this disconsolate mother to my breast, my tears have mingled with hers: all the ties that bound her to the world are severed, and she wishes only for the moment that will put a period to her existence, when she fondly hopes she may be again united to her daughter. To the husband I have never uttered a word. His sorrow is deep and gloomy. He avoids all conversation, and an attempt to console him would be an insult on the sacredness of his grief. He has tasted celestial joys. He has lost the object of his love, and henceforth the earth is for him a desert.

For the brutal father there is no punishment. His conscience itself inflicts none, for he expressed not the least regret when informed of the fate of his daughter.

Email security is of a paramount importance as there is an abundance of viruses and malware that can compromise data security. The methods of encryption and digital signing are some ways to secure email, and will be looked into in detail in the ninth chapter of this book.
Last, but not the least, etiquettes of email will be talked about in the last chapter of this book.

a definitive guide for any business seeking to learn more about email implementation and design

As the managing director of a non-profit that relies heavily on internet use and email, we recently switched our email to Zoho from Outlook. Due to my lack of detailed knowledge in the field, one of my network administrators referred me to this book in order to gain further insight. He wished for us to have a more secure system that handled attachments with higher security and so forth. After reading the material in this guide, my level of understanding has increased exponentially. From common mail server descriptions and email security techniques all the way to enforcing email policies and etiquette, I was impressed with the depth of the material. The writing itself is erudite and the author is an obvious authority on the subject, making it even easier to absorb the information without getting overwhelmed or fatigued. Also, the information on staying on the “whitelist” and not getting blacklisted was worth the purchase alone.

In summation, if you’re looking for a guide that will explain email in a manner that is relevant and actually easy to comprehend, then you can’t do better than this one. I’m sure it will remain in our business library as a reference for a long time to come.

Good Overview of Email, but no technical details of the setup.

This book is not super technical. It will not dive into the exact configuration of any email server system, nor will it provide details in regards to the setup of an email server. It will however, give you a good idea of how email works, different types of mechanism involved and what to consider when setting up an email system. It is more of an overview of "Email Architecture". Overall very informative.
