In Troubling Freedom Natasha Lightfoot tells the story of how Antigua's newly freed black working people struggled to realize freedom in their everyday lives, prior to and in the decades following emancipation. She presents freedpeople's efforts to form an efficient workforce, acquire property, secure housing, worship, and build independent communities in response to elite prescriptions for acceptable behavior and oppression. Despite its continued efforts, Antigua's black population failed to convince whites that its members were worthy of full economic and political inclusion. By highlighting the diverse ways freedpeople defined and created freedom through quotidian acts of survival and occasional uprisings, Lightfoot complicates conceptions of freedom and the general narrative that landlessness was the primary constraint for newly emancipated slaves in the Caribbean.

Across the Americas, these freedom struggles were met by systematic efforts to deny freedpeople opportunities to control their own destinies and partake in the varied joys of free life. Antigua's black working men and women continued to fight for the right to property, housing, and to live as they saw fit, even resorting to strikes and uprisings to achieve those results. Troubling Freedom is an important contribution to our understandings of what freedom meant to ex-slaves throughout the Americas.

Light observed from distant objects is found to be deflected by the gravitational field of massive objects near the line of sight - an effect predicted by Einstein in his first paper setting forth the general theory of relativity, and confirmed by Eddington soon afterwards. If the source of the light is sufficiently distant and bright, and if the intervening object is massive enough and near enough to the line of sight, the gravitational field acts like a lens, focusing the light and producing one or more bright images of the source. This book, by renowned researchers in the field, begins by discussing the basic physics behind gravitational lenses: the optics of curved space-time. It then derives the appropriate equations for predicting the properties of these lenses. In addition, it presents up-to-date observational evidence for gravitational lenses and describes the particular properties of the observed cases. The authors also discuss applications of the results to problems in cosmology

nice confirmation of General Relativity

Gravitational lenses are one of the most beautiful manifestations of Einstein's theory of General Relativity. The book explains how from the equations of GR, a massive star that is in the line of sight between us and a distant bright star can cause the production of multiple images. Several of these have been observed in the visible spectrum. Eloquent images.

Thus, the book also goes into the observational evidence for such lensing. This involves testing the light from the purported images, to affirm whether or not the spectral properties of the images are similar enough that they are in fact images of the same star. Are the redshifts the same, for example?

It is also shown that the lensing also gives us a diagnostic handle on the star doing the lensing. Very useful, as the star might be so distant in its own right as to preclude several other types of analysis.

This text must be on the shelf of anyone with more than a casual interest in Gravitational Lensing. It is admittedly somewhat dated at this point, but serves as the standard reference in the field, and an excellent starting point for anyone entering the field as a student or investigator.

Lively writing and fun facts, not all of them true

The first chapters of on gut anatomy and mechanics are a delight, written with authority and high spirits in equal measure. I learned a lot. Enders has a lively sense of curiosity and humor, and an endearing habit of anticipating readers' questions and answering them with great detail and patience. I loved the details. I was disappointed in the later chapters, maybe because I know more about the microbiome than about gut workings. There was too much "truthiness," too many trendy hypotheses and scientific urban legends presented as fact. Martin Blaser's hypothesis that loss of H pylori is behind the epidemic of asthma is fascinating, maybe even true, but not yet evidence-based. There is no real evidence that H pylori causes Parkinsonism, or toxo (cat parasite) schizophrenia. There's no problem in presenting these as intriguing hypotheses, as long as you don't give the impression they are well established science. Perhaps the strangest was the blithe claim that salmonellosis in German eggs is caused by farmers buying cheap grain from Africa, where random turtles walk about in the fields pooping on seeds. Leaving aside the xenophobia, most outbreaks of Salmonella do not come from strolling exotic reptiles but from domestic, endemic infections in livestock. Recently, Germany has spawned numerous European outbreaks of salmonellosis in the old-fashioned way: poorly regulated high-density factory farming with birds crammed into tiny, filthy cages. The most recent outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis PT14b has resulted in nearly 300 cases, and one death in the U.K. It has been traced to Bayern Ei, a notorious egg producer in Bavaria. In the U.S., Aldi's has recalled contaminated German chocolates from its shelves...

Best popular science writing EVER - a brilliant, witty treasure trove of insanely useful information

I don't believe I've ever learned more useful information per page than in "Gut" -- and I'm trained as a doctor! The whole time I'm reading this, I'm shaking my head, thinking, "How come we weren't taught that in med school?" A longer, more thorough review is forthcoming, but in the meantime, if you are a fan of eating or have ever eaten in your lifetime, ever had a "gut feeling" about anything, or happen to possess a digestive tract, you need to read this. Is there anything more fundamental than knowing how your body extracts energy and nutrients from food? Dr Giulia Enders covers all aspects of the gut and how it relates to your mind, mood, hormones, and health, and does it all in a style that's accessible to the 10yr old and enjoyable to the seasoned professional.
Also, she's freakin' hilarious. More to come.

Everybody poops

I learned some stuff about the stomach I had no clue about. There is some really good info about current science around the gut flora along with stuff about food digestion such as oils, carbs, meats and how they are digested. There are some nice images along the way that are light hearted and helpful to explain the process. Overall it is a fun read and I highly recommend it.

Excellent HVAC book

This is a great book.

I must say i knew very little about HVAC, and with this book i now have a little more insight of the world of HVAC.

I would like the book to have a bit more math in it, but then again it is a very practical book and probably it's best not to have that much math... Not really sure on this, as i haven't work, until so far, in the HVAC industry - i hope to work one day, though (Mechanical Engineer here).
It states some few equations as if they are universal truths and does not explain where they've came from. One may want to know where they've came from, and in this book he won't find the answer to it. This may or may not be a negative point, depending on the reader; personally, i would rather have those equations explained, but it is a personal matter. I think that despitie this point, the book still deservers 5 stars, if not 6.

If you are interested on learning more about how to estiamte HVAC loads, this is not the right book for you.

The book is not heavy on math by any means and so you won't find mass balances in it neither energy balances (apart from one or two examples, in which the author uses the realation q = m cp (delta T)). Evolutions of the air within AHU and the different process the air may go to are also not explained (it assumes you are already familiarized with them from previous thermodynamic courses or so).

I think that this book is a very practical book and i love the approach the author gives, explaining all in a very clear manner, but i also think that if you do not have any background whatsoever in Mech Engineering (and even if you have it), you need more than this book to really understand somethings in the world of HVAC, such as:
- the evolutions of the air within both the AHU and Terminal Units
- how to estimate HVAC loads
- understand more about latent heat within the zones and its implications
- predict the outdoor air requirements for ventilation (the autor gives more emphasis to VAV systems and in that sense it basically refers that the outdoor air requirements are 30% of the maximum air requirements, which is ok, but one would like to know more about this, probably)

Bottom line, the book is excellent, really a 5 star book, but the world of HVAC is just that big. So, it is impossible to have it all in just one "small" book. According the approach the author has chosen to follow, the book is awesome nevertheless.

As a last note: i have two more books about HVAC and i think that this one is the best one and therefore i won't ever get rid of it. Like i have said above, the other two books touch points that this one doesn't and thus i won't get rid of them as well.
