Bastien is now the man of the house. His mom has sacrificed everything to give him a new life and he’s determined to do everything in his power to take care of her. Verona, Indiana is Bastien’s chance to start over and he’s not about to waste the opportunity.

The grumpy old man next-door is most certainly not one of the more attractive features of Bastien’s new hometown, but Bastien’s opinion of him slowly begins to change. More intriguing is Viktor, a Verona High School wrestler who mows his lawn shirtless. Viktor stirs Bastien’s passion, but he tries desperately to hide his desires. He doesn’t want Verona to be Chicago all over again.

As he settles into his new life, Bastien discovers that Verona is different from what he has known before and not in the boring, watching-corn-grow-for-entertainment way he anticipated. The little town of Verona is odd, perhaps even bizarre, but maybe here he can forget the friends who turned on him and the father who tried to kill him. Lawn Boy is a tale of friendship, love, lust, and acceptance.

An Enjoyable Read.
By Brian
I always enjoy Mark's books and this one was no exception. I've followed the series since "A Better Place," and they are always an enjoyable read. It was nice to catch up with some of the characters we haven't heard from in awhile. I always wondered about Taylor's parents, even though we've heard about his mother before in another book. I think all of Mark's books have well-developed and interesting characters who are faced with real life problems and decisions. Not all those decisions are the correct ones either. I'm looking forward to the next book when it comes out!

Sweet Home Indiana
By Tar Larner
Mark Roeder's stories of idyllic Verona repainted my impression of gay-hating Indiana. Lawn Boy is a new edition to the series, each of which follows gay-troubled youth to this oasis of acceptance and understanding. Bastien is the main character, a high school freshman. The previous character are still involved, even those off to college. There is drama and comedy, with boy finally meeting boy. The sex is mild and hardly dramatic. An enjoyable read.

I won't spoil anything but I highly recommend this novel for any fan of Mark's previous work
By Victor Thomas
Another winner from Mark Roeder. If you have read any of the previous novels in the Gay Youth Chronicles, a series of books by Mark, then this fills in a few gaps about the aftermath of events in a previous novel that I had wondered about in the past. I won't spoil anything but I highly recommend this novel for any fan of Mark's previous work.

A very sad story
By Sue M.
This is a very good but heartbreaking story of a brave young man. I am so thankful I never had to go through what this family had to endure. I had read it long ago in high school and wanted to read it again.

From Library Journal
This volume, a product of the Vedanta Society of Western Washington, is a capably written and presented overview of certain tenets of Vedanta relevant to mind control and meditation. Swami Bhaskarananda's material includes a pronunciation guide for transliterated Sanskrit words, as well as appendixes dealing with additional reading and visual depictions of the deep state of meditation. He also deals with obstacles to meditation in some detail and the value of meditation as a form of stress relief. In short, this volume should be useful for both new and accustomed practitioners.

It is a wonderfully rich and mature treatise on meditation and growth in spiritual life, with many fine observations which should help beginners and more advanced practitioners as well to advance along the spiritual path. ... Mind Over Matter
By A Customer
Meditation is a topic that has both cosmic relevance and cosmic resonance. In spite of its universal appeal, for most people total control of mind remains an elusive goal and daunting task. From time immemorial, there have been many attempts throughout the world to unlock the mysteries of the mind and to achieve total control over it through a variety of techniques. One of the most powerful of these techniques is meditation. In his book, Meditation, Mind and Patanjali¡¯s Yoga, Swami Bhaskarananda provides a clear and concise exposition of the theory and practice of meditation to a global audience. The book is based primarily on the methods of mind control developed by the ancient Hindu sage Patanjali who had mastered the secrets of the human mind. Swami Bhaskarananda adds much more to his discussion of meditation beyond Patanjali¡¯s famous aphorisms by drawing from the experiences of many spiritual leaders, sages, saints, and holy people such as Buddha, Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda. The author liberally uses anecdotes and familiar examples from contemporary life to illustrate and illuminate abstruse or esoteric points.

The book consists of a brief introduction and twenty short chapters. Chapter I sets forth the rationale for meditation. The focus of the next chapter is the teacher-student relationship in the practice of meditation. Chapter III outlines Patanjali¡¯s eight-step discipline to yoga and Chapters IV-X elaborate on these steps. Obstacles to and hazards in meditation are discussed in Chapters XI and XII, respectively. The well-known, but widely misunderstood, concept of kundalini power is the subject of Chapter XIII. The Sankhya theory of creation is briefly examined in the next chapter. A lucid discussion of Samadhi in its multiple forms constitutes Chapter XV. The post-Samadhi state is explained in the next chapter. The three chapters that follow discuss Japa, spiritual progress, and stress relief, in that order. Concluding remarks are offered in Chapter XX.
This is not a book for those who are looking for miracle mind control or ¡°power¡± yoga. Rather, it is intended for the true aspirants who are willing to diligently and earnestly practice the tried, tested, and time-honored techniques of meditation. The value of this highly instructive book is further enhanced by its many user-friendly features. These include the illustrations and photographs of sages and saints who have achieved Samadhi through meditation, a comprehensive glossary, and a detailed index. A list of recommended books for further reading is another appealing feature of this volume. In summary, the clear, concise, and non-technical discussion of the art and science of meditation, including many practical suggestions, makes this volume a must-have for any serious student and practitioner of meditation.

This book is a gem.
By Joseph Peidle
Swami Bhaskarananda covers a wide range of topics, from stress relief to samadhi. Any reader can extract practical guidance from this book due to the frank discussion of human psychology. Charming analogies occur frequently, such as this one:

"The average person's mind is like the rug in a living room. Over the years a lot of dust accumulates under the rug, but the dirt remains completely hidden. ... To improve the quality of the mind, ... elimination of these [hidden] defects is absolutely necessary." (pp 205-6)

The text is supplemented by photographs and useful line drawings such as "Correct posture for meditation."

Simple and Concise
By Suzan Douglass
I have read several commentaries on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and I find this book to be one of the best. It is a wonderful introduction to Meditation and Yoga, especially for westerners. Many people want to know more about meditation, and it is good to have such a clear and consise source of information. Meditation and Hinduism are vast subjects, and the reader is often duanted by the scope of available material on them. Swami Bhaskarananda helps the reader to sift through the vast jungle of Indian Philosophy and gets to the core of meditation practice. His analogies and anecdotes make it a pleasant read as well as being informative.

Descartes: His Life and Thought, by Geneviéve Rodis-Lewis

Geneviéve Rodis-Lewis is uniquely qualified to celebrate René Descartes. This major intellectual biography illuminates the personal and historical events of Descartes's life, from his birth and early years in France to his death in Sweden, his burial, and the fate of his remains. Concerned not only with historical events but also with the development of Descartes's personality, Rodis-Lewis speculates on the effect childhood impressions may have had on his philosophy and scientific theories. She considers in detail his friendships, particularly with Isaac Beeckman and Marin Mersenne. Primarily on the basis of his private correspondence, Rodis-Lewis gives a thorough and balanced discussion of his personality. The Descartes she depicts is by turns generous and unforgiving, arrogant and open-minded, loyal in his friendship but eager for the isolation his work required. Rodis-Lewis clarifies Descartes's school days, his family's circumstances and social status, the location of the famous "stove" where Descartes first discovered the foundations of his science, his military life, and the birth and death of his daughter. She is careful to point out the gaps that remain in the record of Descartes's life. Drawing on Descartes's writings and his public and private correspondence, she corrects the errors of earlier biographies and clarifies many obscure episodes in the philosopher's life.

From Library Journal
This biography was published in France in 1995, the same year that another masterly study appeared in this country (Stephen Gaukroger's Descartes: An Intellectual Biography, LJ 4/1/95). There has been a resurgence of interest in this philosopher, and with good reason: Descartes is generally acknowledged as a pivotal figure in the transition from medieval to modern thinking about the world. This biography, written by a Frenchwoman (professor emerita at the Sorbonne) who has been immersed in Cartesian studies for decades, gives us a portrait of Descartes that perhaps only a compatriot could. The author is so familiar with her subject that she refers to him often as Ren?, and the story of his life and interests is rendered in as much intimate detail as can be derived from his extensive correspondence, which the author principally relies on to bring her subject to life. She shows him "warts and all," and Descartes emerges as a living presence rather than merely a historical figure. A good purchase for academic libraries, to complement the Gaukroger book.ALeon H. From Booklist
This relatively compact biography of the seventeenth-century French philosopher is determined to reverse the slander of scandal in vogue among Descartes' recent biographers and to modify the view of his intellectual development. Rodis-Lewis bristles at the recently advanced image of Descartes as a famous libertine, taking pains to note, for example, that his affections for a particular male companion were entirely brotherly. Drawing frequently on Descartes' correspondence, Rodis-Lewis quarrels with previous accounts of his college training, and traces his early dismay with the Jesuit scholastic method and his movement through mathematics and on to metaphysics. She then focuses on the development of Descartes' philosophical method, which he hoped might be learned and practiced by everyday readers (to which end he wrote Discourse on Method in French, not the more elite Latin); on his difficult intellectual (and sometimes political) battles; and lastly on his study of passions, and his related sympathy for and efforts on behalf of some convicted criminals. She openly champions a newly respectable, if not altogether equable, Descartes, one driven by a search for truth. Jim O'Laughlin

From Kirkus Reviews
A detailed scholarly biography of one of the intellectual founders of the modern world, by a distinguished French scholar, the second after Stephen Gaukroger's 1995 ``intellectual biography.'' Every educated person knows Descartes's one famous line (``cogito, ergo sum''); but the full story of what he thought and who he was is less familiar. Rodis-Lewis, professor emeritus at the Sorbonne and a winner of the Grand Prix of the Acadmie Franaise, undertakes to repair that deficiency. Born in 1596, Descartes was the son of a well-to-do lawyer. His training in mathematics and philosophy came at the remarkably egalitarian Jesuit-run College of La Fleche (in Paris); even at that stage, he insisted on finding things out for himself, and read widely in subjects outside the normal curriculum, including alchemy and astrology. Rodis-Lewis often disagrees with previous biographers on the effect of these readings on his mature philosophy. At age 21, he joined the army (the Thirty Years War was just beginning), hoping to see the world; and for most of the next two decades, Descartes returned to France only rarely, living primarily in the Netherlands. His voluminous correspondence made him a familiar figure in the intellectual circles of the time. In due course, he revolutionized not only philosophy (with his ground-breaking Discourse on Method) but mathematics (contributing largely to the invention of calculus). He died in 1650, at the court of Queen Christina in Sweden. Rodis-Lewis gives the reader the broad pattern of Descartes's life, but she is primarily interested in the origins and development of his thought, and uses both his correspondence and his various journals to trace the sparks for his major ideas and intellectual preoccupations. A good deal of the text is spent in quibbling with previous biographers over dates. And she makes very little concession to the interests of readers who are not thoroughly grounded in the history of the period and of its ideas. Balanced and well documented, this work will be of interest primarily to historians and scholars. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A splendidly researched and vividly written biography.
By Midwest Book Review
Genevieve Rodis-Lew is Professor Emerita at the Sorbonne and has written a splendid biography on the life and thought of a major and influential 17th Century European philosopher. Ably translated into English by Jane Marie Todd, Descartes is vividly presented in the context of his time. Drawing upon his own correspondence, Rodis-Lewis traces his disillusion with the Jesuit scholastic method and his attraction mathematics and then to metaphysics. Descartes emerges for the modern reader as a complete and complex man, so much more than a mere footnote in the history of science or the evolution of western philosophical traditions.

almost unreadable
By chainlink
This isn't a bad book, exactly, just a nearly unreadable one--at least for a public prepared for a coherent general picture of Descartes. Its intended audience seems to be the small band of Descartes biographers over the centuries, whom the author takes to task, now one, now another, on this matter and that--on this interpretation of such and such a biographical artifact, or on that reading of a chronology implied by these letters or that diary entry. The book reads, in fact, less like a biography than a sort of catalogue raisonee of all the things still extant that bear Descartes' fingerprint.

There are, nevertheless, some interesting things that emerge from this constant professional cavilling. Despite the fact that Pascal is usually seen as in some sense the polar opposite of Descartes, at points in his philosophical apprenticeship Descartes appears to have experienced something very like Pascal's nuit de feu (an ecstatic, visionary experience that shaped his subsequent career in Christian apologetics). Descartes, too, it seems, carried around with him something like a sketchy account of a dream-experience that pointed out the path his life should take, namely that of subjection to a capital-T Truth. Odd that a career devoted to strictest rationality should have such an experience at its origins.

Raimonds Staprans: Art of Tranquility and Turbulence, by Paul J. Karlstrom, Peter Helena Demakova, Peter Selz

In 1947 the young Raimonds Staprans emigrated with his family from Latvia to America, and for the past half century the artist and playwright has lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area. In Raimonds Staprans: Art of Tranquility and Turbulence, Paul Karlstrom investigates the realism and abstraction in Staprans's work, focusing on the more edgy and self-revealing paintings by bringing the artist's life experience and personal psychology prominently into the equation. Karlstrom recognizes that the meaning of Staprans's work cannot be understood solely in terms of the painterly skill and aesthetic beauty that characterize the landscapes, marines, and still lifes. Neither can it be fully appreciated in the minimalist abstraction with which Staprans qualifies his realism. Rather, the key to understanding is hidden in the secret life and philosophical preoccupation that emerged in the author's interviews with the artist.

Two prominent writers provide brief essays dealing with Staprans as a "trans-Atlanticist": Latvian cultural critic Helena Demakova brings the perspective of the artist's native country to his American émigré story. American art historian Peter Selz examines realism's rich modernist potential in Staprans and other artists who have pushed realism to discover new conceptual and aesthetic truths.

Staprans is also a writer, known in Latvia mainly for his work for the stage, and excerpts from his writings provide insight into his painting.

Raimonds Strapans: Art of Tranquility and Trurbulence
By J. McIntyre
Outstanding book on Strapans. Showing works that he considers controversal and an interview with him about these works. He was also a playwright and he describes the reason behind them. The book shows his early works and because of this one can see the evolution of his style. I would recommend this book to any one interested in the Bay Area Artists from the early 50-60's and is also familular with Wayne Thiebaud's work to see the difference between the two artists.

A Fine Monograph on One of California Bay Area Artists Worthy of Attention
By Grady Harp
Raimonds Staprans may not be a household name among the many devotees of the Bay Area artists such as Thiebaud, Bechtle, Parks, Diebenkorn, Brown etc - artists who capture the light and landscape of that particularly beautiful region - but this monograph should change that recognition. Author Paul Karlstrom has written a scholarly evaluation of Staprans' work and career and includes enough visual and written information to seduce the reader into an appreciation for a gifted quiet artist.

Staprans, born in 1926 in Latvia, emigrated to the US in 1947 when Communism created a negative space for artistic thought. In a fine essay by Helena Demekova the influence of his country's art tradition and sociopolitical upheaval is clearly defined. Once in the USA Staprans settled in the Bay Area where he began his painting output as an abstract expressionist only to gradually evolve into a painter of landscape, still life (fruits, paint cans, angry birds), and nudes in a manner in which he flattened his compositional lines and utilized brilliant color fields in what has been termed 'realist abstraction and psychological expressionism'. Art historian essayist Peter Selz examines and defines Staprans' place in the field of art in an illuminating manner, posing that 'realism' enhances the brilliance of conceptual abstraction.

But worthy as the written words about Raimonds Staprans are, nothing compares to the generous examples of his works included in this tome. The paintings follow his career, the most impressive being the extraordinarily luminous poolscapes and simple houses in design of complex canvases, works that engender comparison to the works of Wayne Thiebaud, Josef Albers and even Mondrian. Staprans use of vibrant, explosive color in patterns that suggest realism but go beyond to a plane of painterly truth in forms that are uniquely his. This is magnificent painting, work that has earned him a well-deserved seat in the pantheon of Bay Area artists. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, July 06
