By focusing on Greek literature ranging from the oral epics to the travel writing of the Roman Empire, this book explores the relationship between the city's spaces as they were represented in the Greek literary tradition and the physical realities of a developing city that had been continuously inhabited since at least the second millennium BC. Spurred on especially by the city's catastrophic sack by Alexander the Great in 335 BC, the urban topography of Thebes came more and more to reflect the literary, even fictional, constructions of its mythic past.

Daniel W. Berman is Associate Professor of Greek and Roman Classics at Temple University, Philadelphia. He has published articles on Aeschylus, the city of Thebes, the Dirce spring, the Boeotian poetess Corinna, and related subjects. His first monograph, Myth and Culture in Aeschylus' Seven against Thebes, was published in 2007, and he is the translator from French of a book by Claude Calame, Myth and History in Ancient Greece: The Symbolic Creation of a Colony (2003).

Final book in series is a GREAT disappointment

After finally making it to book 8 of the 8-book series Royal House of Niroli, I had great hopes for this book. I was very disappointed. The hero was a jerk who didn't finally show any redeeming qualities until about the last 8 pages. And I really thought that the final book would make an attempt to tie the 8 related couples together in some way, to let us see how the couples in the previous books were faring - children, etc. - since these were all cousins/siblings from the same royal family - but no, there was virtually no mention of them. If Harlequin is going to bother to have a series about the same family, there should be some actual interaction among these characters. It's fine if each couple has its own book, but let there be some INTERACTION - that's the pleasure of having a series spotlighting one extended family - INTERACTION ! Penny Jordan wasted such a good opportunity to really tie things together. I felt cheated when I finally put down book 8. Like, is that all there is?

Some glorious moments when Penny Jordan's writing was at it's best

A great example of PJ's once-upon-a-time writing flair - she could feel the muscle's sensitive flutter as it whispered to her of its secret trauma. Automatically she responded to its need, stroking first reassurance and then, once it had accepted her touch, using a deeper, more searching kneading technique to send strength back into it, giving it power and confidence, telling it with her touch that it need not fear, that it could trust itself.

Unfortunately, H Kadir is a harsh,insulting man, right from the first meeting. He carries scars from his past (don't we all?) which are demolished by Natalia's fierce accusations whenever Leon tries to dominate her. There are several long winded, bogged down over-detailed pages which nearly bought down the five stars I gave. But the obligatory skirmishes between wife and OW are deliciously drawn in daggers with a stunning twist ending I didn't see coming. And finally! proper attention rarely given to a decent final chapter, where author is still beautifully developing Natalia and Kadir's characters and private love. A literary triumph with wonderful phrases - highly recommended - a standing ovation if I could.

Loved how the story didn't focus on the traditional sheikh stories. Instead it touched on the heritage and forming of different love of culture, Venice. The art was also beautiful. There is pregnancy and succession roles.

About the Author
Paul Wellin worked for Wolfram Research from the mid 1990s through 2011 directing the Mathematica training efforts with the Wolfram Education Group. He has taught mathematics at both public schools and at the university level for over 12 years. He has given talks, workshops and seminars around the world on the integration of technical computing and education and he has served on numerous government advisory panels on these issues. He is the author of several books on Mathematica.

okay but overpriced.

while this book may be of some help to a beginner wanting to learn how to use WL (the Wolfram language is the name of the programming language that the Mathematica application uses), it is not at all essential and if one does want to have a WL textbook to keep near their computer, the much less expensive paperback "An Elementary Introduction to the Wolfram Language" written by Stephen Wolfram, the designer of WL is a far better choice). what this book fails to do (the book by Wolfram also fails to do this) is explain what WL is and how it works. the fundamental programming paradigm on which WL is based, term rewriting, is not even mentioned in the text. To understand WL (as opposed to just using it), there is a 2.5 hour YouTube video tutorial and a linked downloadable 42 page note set by Gaylord (a co-author with Wellin on several Mathematica and WL books). personally, i think the most interesting about WL is its conceptual underpinning which is truly unique amongst programming languages and well worth reading about in its own right (it will also help you become a much better WL programmer and i found that writing programs in WL is both far more enjoyable and much more rapid to do than writing programs in other languages).

I found this book to be very helpful. It is not a primer. I think it is excellent for someone moving from beginner to confident user of Mathematica or someone like me who doesn't use Mathematica every day but uses it for serious purposes. For example, I found the material on using options and exceptions in developing effective procedures far more useful than the help sections of Mathematica itself.
