Martin Storey is a renowned knitwear designer and author. Designer and Publisher should never collaborate again?

I am keeping this book for 3 reasons: the Mackintosh Rose chart, the Thistle chart, and the Tay Tarten color story. The first two would serve better as needlepoint or cross-stitch patterns due to the awkward distribution of 3-color stranding and the third item is an excellent example of the poor quality of the knit examples in this book. I hate to slam on test knitters, especially in a book of harder knits like this one, because I think it is usually the result of design decisions and production problems with the publisher, but . . . the sleeve cap on Tay Tarten is a hot mess, the back of the Mackintosh cardigan looks like they put it through a wringer, and could they not clip in those mitts so they at least looked like they fit an arm instead of a leg? I feel strongly that these problems are the direct result of design decisions and not the knitters' fault.

Highlights:
Do you like making swatches? boy do I have some blankets you will like! You make 40 swatches and then sew them together! Yay, you will look like you have no imagination!
That leaf garland sweater from the cover: did you know that there are random, kind of ugly argyle stripes on it? No, because the model is cleverly hiding them with her hair and her awkwardly placed arms! Not an accident!
NOT all the color work has charts. The houndstooth accessories have no chart even though they stretched that out for three whole projects. In three separate projects they couldn't find the space for an itty chart. Not to worry, there is: a half-page of tree, a quarter-page of flower, and they have a full-page, full length back view of a hat and mittens on a person in a wood, but not a back or side view of a cabled cardigan later! None of the cabling has charts.
The fair isle cardigan on the cover is a strange beast. It almost echoes the bold harsh colors of early f.i. (which can have a charming effect) but the pattern is too broken up by odd color choices and pattern to a point that registers as ugly speckles. This was one of my big disappointments. I looked at this book on different monitors and the sweater looked subtle and nice, but when I got the book the colors were awful. At least the sleeve cap is tidy.

Scottish Knits is a classic example of "hard" hand knits that are not shown to be worth the trouble. And certainly the production of the samples and the book proves that they don't think knitters are worthy of excellent directions and well-executed charts, photos, and examples. If I'm going to knit the hard way, the backwards way, the poorly engineered way, the results better be drop-dead breath-taking. This book is far from that ideal.

Collection of Patterns for Rowan Tweed Yarns

Martin Storey is one of my favorite designers, but this collection has only two patterns that I would consider knitting: the Skye Poncho (with an elaborate interlocking cable in front), and the Cromarty (aka "Aviemore") coat (sideways-knit, with Fair Isle fronts and collar, and fishtail triangles in back).

Apparently the book is titled SCOTTISH KNITS because the designs are named after places in Scotland ("Aberdeen Argyll", "Caithness Socks", etc.), and are accompanied by uncaptioned stock photos that probably were taken in these locations. The knitted models are NOT photographed on location. Generally the designs include "Scottish" elements, such as tartan patterns, Aran cables, and Fair Isle colorwork motifs. I have no idea what the "Twist" mentioned in the book's subtitle might be, because none of the cabled designs seem to use any new or unusual knitting techniques. There is minimal description of each pattern, no discussion of "Scottish" knitting per se, and only a very general two pages of "knitting know-how" at the back.

The book cover shows two of the prettier sweater designs ("Portree Sweater" and "Ross Cardigan"). The colorways in these sweaters are typical--overall the colorways used in the book's designs seem rather odd to me: gray and black; predominately pink and green; large areas of red, green, gold, and white. Because SCOTTISH KNITS strikes me as just another pattern collection intended to sell Rowan yarn (Fine Tweed, Felted Tweed, and Tweed), I rate it generously at 3 stars ("it's okay" on the official Amazon scale).

Colourwork and Celtic Cables~ What's not to like?

I just received this lovely book, and haven't knit anything as yet...but I know it won't be long before my first project!

There are 24 patterns in this book, in colourwork, texture, cables and lace. With the exception of a single jacket with lace trim, the colourwork designs are definitely not subdued, but are shot through with wonderfully unexpected colour, as well as pattern, combinations. And to tease the eye further, throughout the book are scattered many stunning photographs of the varied scenery in and around Scotland.

Colourwork:
..a cushion
..a knee rug which can be enlarged to become a bed cover
..a pair of socks
..3 pair of mittens
..a houndstooth hat
..2 scarves
..a bag
..a jacket

Colourwork and lace:
..a lovely jacket with lace edging

Texture:
..a beautiful textured stole which is very elegant in its simplicity
..7 sweaters and jackets (pullover and cardigan)in colourwork, cables and/or lace
..a textured throw or bed cover

Cables:
..a cardigan
..a poncho
..a tunic

Don't be put off by the fact that the patterns are designed around the beautiful Rowan yarns, mostly tweeds, because there is absolutely no reason why a knitter could not substitute similar weight yarns.

My one complaint about this book, and it is a big one, is that while there is a chart for the textured bed throw, as well as charts for all of the colourwork, there are no charts for the other cabled, nor lace, projects. In one project alone, a tunic, there are five cabled panels, and the written instructions are located on three different pages ~ now this means that the knitter will have to flip back and forth through each of these pages just to knit one row, and that is plain ridiculous.

Okay, I can spend the time to chart the projects I really want to knit, but why could not the editors have included charts for all of the projects, and make the book more user-friendly? Because of this serious flaw, I can only give this book 4 stars, while the designs are definitely worth a 5.

All in all, it is definitely worth every penny, and I'm glad to have it in my library.

Quiet, simple, beautiful poetry

Looking through the bookshelves at a local antique shop, I saw a small, slim little volume entitled “The Buck in the Snow and Other Poems.” The poet was Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), and this volume was the sixth edition published in 1928. Looking at the printing history page, I could see that all six editions had been published in 1928, and all of them between September and December, with three printings in September alone.

Consider that a book of poetry had six printings in four months. Either the publisher, Harper & Brothers, had seriously miscalculated demand, or the collection had proven wildly and unexpectedly popular. Or both. Now consider the odds of a book of poetry being published today and going through six editions in four months.

I had read some of Millay’s poems in high school English classes, but I had never read her poetry in depth. The one poem I could easily recall was the short “First Fig,” with the famous line about burning one’s candle at both ends. But with my new purchase for 75 cents (plus tax), I took the book home and decided to learn more.

Millay won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1923 for “The Ballad of the Harp Weaver,” and by the time The Buck in the Snow was published five years later, she was a “presence” in American poetry. The years between the Pulitzer and The Buck in the Snow were occupied with writing more poetry, opera librettos, getting married, traveling, and moving to Steepletop, the home that’s most closely associated with her today.

While she was associated with romantic poetry (and something called “women’s poetry”), Millay also epitomized, for some at least, the “new woman” who had emerged in the 1920s. She was generally shy, but she could also be outspoken and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind. Her reputation faded in the generation after her death until she was rediscovered as part of the feminism movement.

I’ve since read her “Collected Poems” and one thing I can say is that she liked exclamation points. Her poetry exhibits a sense of life, perhaps a sense for life. She sees very clearly indeed with her poet’s eye. This is the title poem from the collection I found in the antique shop.

The Buck in the Snow

White sky, over the hemlocks bowed with snow,
Saw you not at the beginning of evening the antlered buck and his doe
Standing in the apple-orchard? I saw them. I saw them suddenly go,
Tails up, with long leaps lovely and slow,
Over the stone-wall into the wood of hemlocks bowed with snow.

Now he lies here, his wild blood scalding the snow.

How strange a thing is death, bringing to his knees, bringing to his antlers
The buck in the snow.
How strange a thing--a mile away by now, it may be,
Under the heavy hemlocks that as the moments pass
Shift their loads a little, letting fall a feather of snow--
Life, looking out attentive from the eyes of the doe.

Excellent if you know how to use it

"Colloquial Chinese" (the older version) is an excellent Mandarin primer, as long as you are aware of its limitations and have a plan for supplementing it. The only real problem with this book is that it uses a lot of Maoist scenarios that were relevant in the early eighties but are now rather comical. Once chapter, for example, talks about going to visit the Clear Mountain People's Commune. Although this will not help you much in China today it is only a minor setback.
To make this series work, I suggest you do two things. First, get the supplementary character text book, as this one only uses the Pyin Yin romanization system. Second, get a tutor, or conversation partner, or someone to help you out. Not only will that person help you learn the material, but the chances are he/she will give you more updated, contextual information to supplement the lessons.
Other than that, this is an excellent book. If you stick with the lessons and listen to the tapes you will develop a foundation in Mandarin.

solid, traditional course for the long-term learner

This is a strong course for the motivated learner keen to get a solid grounding in the basics of Mandarin Chinese grammar and vocabulary in order to continue their studies at a higher level. Someone who is more interested in quickly learning situational language and useful phrases for travelling or for business would be better served by a different course more focused on their particular needs since the vocabulary given in this one is quite general.
There's another book with the same title and publisher, but by a different author (K Qian). That book is simpler and more suitable for the casual learner wanting to learn Chinese for travelling, but it doesn't reach as high a level of Chinese as this one. But then again, neither is it as hard going!
Back to this one: there are no Chinese characters in the book. To learn these, it would be useful to buy the companion chinese character version of the book, which gives all the texts and grammatical pattern sentences, but not the grammar explanations, in Chinese characters and teaches you how to write the 700 plus characters introduced. That's available only directly from the authors I think. Unfortunately, there aren't any cassette tapes currently available for this book so it's not really suitable for someone learning completely by themselves unless they already have a good knowledge of Mandarin Chinese pronunciation. Nor are the answers to the exercises given. So it's more suitable to use with a tutor or as supplementary reading for someone attending a chinese class.
I have two quibbles with the book. Firstly, the grammar explanations are a bit dryly written so they are not always easy to understand. Secondly, the lengths of the chapters vary too much. The first few lessons are quite short and concise (perhaps 20 new words get introduced) but by the end of the book, the number of new words given per chapter has ballooned to well over 100. So the later chapters are much more hard going than the earlier ones. The first point can be overcome by buying a set of good Chinese grammars, e.g. the books "Basic Chinese" and "Intermediate Chinese" by Yip and Rimmington and of course by asking your Chinese teacher!
If you include learning how to write, I think there's enough material in the book for 6 months of intensive study or a year for someone who wants to study more slowly (but still regularly).
After mastering the material in the book and learning the 500-700 associated characters, the learner is well-placed to go on to a lower-intermediate text, i.e. at the beginning 2nd year college level.

A very good, and actually colloquial, course

First off, this book is entirely written in Roman characters, not Chinese characters. It uses the standard Pinyin romanization developed in the PRC. Secondly, it seems quite complete. I'm now halfway through it, and it seems to be covering all basic syntax, and not just the introductions or phrases included in other introductions for popular audiences. I'm using it to review Chinese after having taken an intensive university course a year and a half ago. I'm finding it quite excellent for that purpose, getting me up to speed without the slowing burden of trying to read characters. I expect that next time I'm in China I'll do much better at speaking and understanding than last time.
