Not Impressed

After starting this series, I felt like I needed to follow it through, despite feeling like Branded (Book 1) had some concept holes and more than a little cheesiness bogging the narration and pacing down.

I wanted to like Stranded. I really did. If I liked anything, it was probably the ending, which was its one redeeming quality. But all throughout the book, I found myself rolling my eyes at the cheesy, unrealistic love story between two teens, cringing at the awkward dialogue, and ultimately getting frustrated at the tension that resolves itself way too quickly. Because the author allows the barely built tension to dissipate too soon, she frequently has to create new or similar mini moments of tension in an attempt to keep the book from dragging. (Note the "attempt.") This is how we wound up with the rinse and repeat feeling in this book - ie the same events happening over and over again. By the end of the book, I was thoroughly bored with the plot, because it was simply all varying shades of the same theme.

I think the biggest problem is that our author missed the mark on the 3 degrees on tension - inner, social, and plot. The inner tension isn't well-developed. Our "hero" just goes with the flow, and the few times he doesn't, it doesn't cause any significant drama. Any social tension, ie fights, unrequited love, etc is constantly undermined by the author's insistence to maintain a fairy-tale feel to her book. Forgiveness is granted, teens make up, and the tension goes right down the drain. The plot-related tension fizzles because of the way the author prevents any real consequences for her characters. There isn't much of a risk factor when one character can see the future, one can instantly sense danger, another can wish it all away, and yet another can heal any injuries. That's not even taking into account the mind-reader, the super-strength, etc. Additionally, near-death experiences tend to lose their grip when your characters repeatedly get into and back out of them with absolutely no permanent damage.

Needless to say, the book felt amateurish and slow. There were tons of typos, the pacing was miserable, and I found myself strongly disliking all the characters, because of their lack of depth and substance. It was impossible to connect with them. I think it's safe to say I won't be finishing this series, despite nearly always seeing a storyline to its completion. I don't think I could drag myself through another chapter, let alone another book.

Wow, everything seems so easy then wham. I did notice that this second book read more like a harlequin romance, until the wham. Am hoping for little more substance in the next, I still enjoyed the characters and was devastated at the ending.

Couldn't put it down.

the story line it's great, I've had a difficult time putting the book down. I wish there weren't so many holes though. I wound love to know much more about the characters in their past. still a very good read.

... up right where the previous story left off and enjoyed the adventure along the way

The story picks up right where the previous story left off and enjoyed the adventure along the way. After reading this book I got the "Super Mario Bros." feeling. "Thank you for saving me but the princess is in another castle." As the previous story left on a cliffhanger, so does this one. I can hardly wait for the continuation of the story to see how Brinn develops or what new troubles await the hapless princess. Looking forward to Gatekeeper, hope it comes soon. If you are looking for spoilers read another review, I do not want to ruin the adventure that awaits you.

great second book

i have to say that i really enjoyed the book. at first, i didnt care since i found out ahead of time what kind of happens in a broad sense. but, as i kept reading i found that the book became really good. note, brinn is really not the central character of this book which was the reason i bought the first book. anyway, still a great read and im off to start book three. looks like there's going to be more than 3 books since i didnt see anywhere on the preview that the third book is the final book.

Eat This Lose That

Started following this diet about 5 1/2 months ago. I have lost 50 pounds, my labs are much improved. My dr told me if I keep it up I will cure my diabetes within a year. Additionally, my blood pressure meds dosage has now been cut in half and I will probably be off of them completely in the near future. I find it easy to follow since I know that on Friday and Saturday night for dinner I can eat whatever I want. So, if I am craving something during the week I just save it for my Friday or Saturday dinner.

Great information easily understood

Fantastic written book. Easy to understand and made sense. However, diet is so restrictive. However, I understand where and why foods react now. Every diabetic needs to read this book. However, I seriously doubt many people of age will be able to actually follow the recommended diet. We grew up on root vegetables and bread.
