From Consulting to Coaching

I have been in the Career Consulting business for eight years and as a consulting psychologist decided to make the transition into coaching. Marcia Bench's book has served as a handy text for learning a whole new aspect of career transitions. It is well written, easily understood by the layperson and filled with very helpful tools and strategies. Most importantly, she also clearly defines the differences between consulting, coaching and therapy. Any professional would do well to understand this before they take on the role of "coach."

Explanation of the field, from an industry leader

The profession of personal coaching has exploded over the past decade, following the establishment of the field by the late Thomas Leonard, founder of CoachU. A number of sub-categories of the profession have been developed by specialists who began their own educational programs, bodies of knowledge, and certifications. Marcia Bench is one of those specialists, concentrating on the vital field of career coaching.

In addition to her personal coaching of hundreds of clients, Bench formed the Career Coach Institute, a virtual training organization pioneering this part of the coaching field. The Institute was founded in 2001; this book was published in 2003 to share Bench's perspectives, positioning, and body of knowledge.

The first part of the book is devoted to a thorough explanation of coaching and, more specifically, career coaching. While the focus is on individual professionals coaching individual private clients, the concept has broader application in working with students, recent graduates, and corporate employees.

Bench and her followers emphasize what they call "authentic vocations." Their design includes eight factors: life purpose; values; motivators and interests; knowledge, skills, and abilities; work and other expertise; job/career targets; work environment; and business reality. Each of these factors is discussed in a separate chapter.

For anyone in the field of career coaching, or considering the field, this book is a valuable resource.

Vital, gold standard information for career coaching!

This book is an excellent source to learn the information and system of the QuantumShift model. I attended the in person training and refer to the book regularly. I gave a copy to a colleague coach since the system was impressive. I recently compared the model to another system I learned and this system came out on top. The entire curriculum of Authentic Vocation based on purpose, goals, values etc. works in actual practice and has been very rewarding. I recommend the webinars and in person training to achieve the highest level of coaching training. Someone (an experienced coach) recommended me to Marcia Bench and said she (and her training) was the gold standard for career coaching...I would repeat that description..gold standard!

I have been rushing through books in `spare time'. This is one of them.

This book is written clearly. There are some beautiful coloured graphics in the middle of the book. I would have preferred more worked examples and more illustrative graphics to amplify the text. In particular, covariant differentiation and differentiable vector fields and the stepwise approach to proof of the Gauss Bonnet theorem (i.e. triangulations).

These comments almost certainly reflect my struggles with these concepts. There are answers to exercises at the back of the book and a useful bibliography.

A gallery of modern American religious horror

Bivins explores a dramatic side of modern American religion, where the emphasis is on winning souls through fear. Rather than just preaching hellfire and Armageddon in church, these Christians engage all the arts of mass media to drive their warnings home across the nation. As Bivins quotes Christian tract cartoonist Jack Chick, "I want to shock people. I want to make them physically sick when they see this".

Bivins points out that the vast majority of conservative Christians in the USA were non-aggressive during the decades of America's world supremacy. But as American dominance waned, many conservatives blamed the forces of sin, and devoted themselves to a victory for God. Bivins details many of their major media efforts such as Christian cartoons, attacks on popular music, "hell house" dramas, and apocalyptic novels. He finds the level of vindictive violence, blood, and horror in these productions almost stupifying. Instead of offending the religious authorities of his day by daring to forgive sinners, Jesus as portrayed in these productions is bound to execute vengeance for sin. As Jesus says in the Left Behind novel Glorious Appearing, "I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that is justice, and that is your sentence".

The book is good in covering the story plots, knock-out lines, and theatrical methods of fear-mongering Christianity over the past four decades. But the intro. chapter is dense social science talk, and Bivins invites readers to skip this part if inclined. At the end he raises some good questions about how a popular religion of fear is affecting American society.

A good book for anyone who feels than extreme right wing ...

This proves the point: Ignorance is not knowing, stupidity is not wanting to. Fear and ignorance are close companions: you cannot have one without the other and this book shows both feed on each other. A good book for anyone who feels than extreme right wing religion and dangerous for the state, which is why our founders wrote the first amendment the way they did. They understood the danger of mixing state and religion.

Not to Worry...about Christianity in America

The premise of this book is absurd. Islam is the religion of fear and the one we all should fear.

It beheads unbelievers; Christians serve them and offer them the Gospel. Islam is theocratic; Christianity is Christocentric and not theocratic. Islam subjugates women through polygamy, marital rape, and child brides; Christianity sets them free to serve God as equals with men. One could go on. See Robert Spencer, The Religion of Peace.

The book exposes the small and relatively harmless dark side of some churches in America. That is not worth a book.

About the Author
Ron Mittelhammer is a Regents Professor of Economic Sciences and Statistics at Washington State University. He is also a Fellow of the Journal of Econometrics, a Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA), and a Distinguished Scholar of the Western Ag. Economics Association. He has over 250 publications and presentations to his credit, including 100 refereed journal publications. He is a celebrated teacher at the graduate level, receiving national and university-wide awards for instruction, including the AAEA Award for Distinguished Graduate Teaching, the Washington State University Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching, and the WSU-CAHNRS Teaching Excellence Award. He served as President-Elect, President, and Past-President of the AAEA from 2008-2011.

Good read on memory improvement

Good short book on improving your memory. The book helps you a lot in learning how to focus well and how to overcome distractions. The exercises to improve your focus is well written and easy to follow. I found it fascinating on how it teaches you the techniques to learning a language. It was an interesting read.

This guide is excellent! I have read many books on the subject and by far this is the best. It's simple and concise. All you have to do is immediately start practicing these techniques. This book is very well organized, which facilitates its understanding and memorization. It is a fascinating read and is one of those books that I keep referring back to. After reading several books on memory this one took a different approach and I found it the most helpful.
