The Authority

Although most of the hunts O'Connor writes about could not be done today because the wild places he hunted are pretty much tame now, he does take us on one adventure after another. This book is better than any of the African hunting volumes I have read to date. It resides in a prominent position next to my "reading" chair and fireplace. This is THE classic everyone talks about when they mention classics. If you are lucky enough to find one in good shape, count your blessings and enjoy it. I miss the days when writer's like O'Connor and Carmichael wrote real and objective stories.

I subscribe to none of the modern outdoor magazines. Modern hunting writers write advertising copy pretty much. I prefer to read real stories from men who have actually done that and who are not trying to sell you something you really didn't need to hunt. Alas, we can only find that now in old books.

About the Author

An English novelist, poet, playwright, literary critic, and painter, D. H. Lawrence is best known for his novels Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley s Lover. Writing in the period leading up to and following the First World War, Lawrence s work explores the nature of personal and sexual relationships in light of industrialization and the new culture of modernity. Persecuted for his strong opinions, Lawrence spent the second part of his career in an exile he referred to as his savage pilgrimage, while his work continued to be censored and misrepresented, resulting in the sensational obscenity trial of Lady Chatterley s Lover. Lawrence died in 1930 and is considered to be a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism in English literature.

If you like intrigue mised with a little romance, and very complex inter-relationships among main characters, you'll love this classic. Lots of characters, but fairly easy to keep the main ones straight.

This is where his then student Ed Spiegel met him during the summer of 1954, attended his lectures on turbulence and jotted down the notes in hand. His lectures had a twofold purpose: they not only provided a very elementary introduction to some aspects of the subject for novices, they also allowed Chandra to organize his thoughts in preparation to formulating his attack on the statistical problem of homogeneous turbulence. After each lecture Ed Spiegel transcribed the notes and filled in the details of the derivations that Chandrasekhar had not included, trying to preserve the spirit of his presentation and even adding some of his side remarks. The lectures were rather impromptu and the notes as presented here are as they were set down originally in 1954. Now they are being made generally available for Chandrasekhar’s centennial.

About the Author
Nobel Laureate Chandrasekhar derived a novel theory of Turbulence in the 1950's. These notes give a first hand account from Chandrasekhar of the development of this theory. Transcribed by his then student Ed Spiegel, these notes provide a unique insight into the development of this theory. Ed Spiegel is a renowned and highly respected expert in the field of astrophysics, and astrophysical fluid dynamics (he coined the term Blazar), and he provides a wonderful introduction describing the course given by Chandrasekhar with some interesting anecdotes from the lectures as well as a short account of how the theory has evolved since Chandrasekhar's unique contributions over half a century ago.
