About the Author
"Sandy Pfeiffer" has spent a career in technical and professional writing. With a Ph.D. in English, he is vice president for academic affairs and a professor of English at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Georgia. His home department offers both B.S. and M.S. degrees in Technical and Professional Communication, as well as a B. A. in International Technical Communications.

Besides the "Pocket Guide," Pfeiffer has written "Technical Writing: A Practical Approach," now in its 5th edition (Prentice Hall, 2003). The book is used in colleges and universities around the country. He also wrote "Proposal Writing: The Art of Friendly Persuasion" (Merrily 1989); coauthored, with Chuck Keller, "Proposal Writing: The Act of Friendly and Winning Persuasion" (Prentice Hall, 2000); and wrote "Pocket Guide to Public Speaking" (Prentice Hall, 2002).

Since 1979, Pfeiffer has taught communication seminars to business, industry, and government groups in the United States and overseas. Sample seminar topics include Report Writing, Proposals, Oral Presentations, Effective Meetings, and Technical Editing.

Awful Book

I was required to buy this book for school (Professional and Technical Communications class for Engineers and CS majors). It pretty much was a miserable read. While it provided some helpful hints and tips for writing, the examples it provided were terrible. I am the stereotypical engineer who cannot write, but even I knew that the example cover sheets, reports, etc were bad examples. It really taught me what not to do rather than guide me on how to write, which would have been much more helpful.

decent book for school

I pruchased this book for a class i was taking on technical writing. It has good content but was very difficult to actually read because of some design choices. The designers of this book need to take a document design class! In order to highlight important information they used hot pink font on white paper in size 12 font! I have read that paragraph well over 10 times and I cannot tell you what it says. Pages 16, 17,have the hot pink sections. The rest of the book was actually easy to read and full of good information.

Useful for More than School

Although I have only read two chapters out of this so far for my college class, I already find this book very informational. I hope to someday be a writer, and from those two chapters I have read, I have already learned how to use bullets more properly in my writing, and to setup graphs and other informational charts, etc. If you are planning on writing anything "Technical" I would highly recommend this to you.

The Operative Atlas of Laparoscopic Reconstructive Urology is essential reading for all practicing urologists around the globe, offering a comprehensive visual walkthrough of common procedures. Written by leading international experts, and edited by two pioneers in the field of laparoscopic urology who have more than 2,000 surgeries between them, this title also describes common pitfalls to add further worth as a practical surgical manual. Many contributing authors are also highly active in robotic surgery, and as such, this book will additionally cover the robotic applications to many of the described urologic conditions. Laparoscopic urologic surgery is slowly becoming the surgery of choice in most urologic diseases, but as its application to reconstructive operations is a relatively new field, structured training is severely lacking in this area. This atlas therefore provides sequential pictures for most of the reconstructive urology procedures, with particular focus on pyeloplasty and ureteric reimplantation. Illustrations for each chapter on the whole come from a single case, with diagrammatic representation often also included to deepen clarity. In total the book contains 40 chapters, each offering a step-by-step illustrative approach, with specific reference to procedures directed at the following areas: - Kidney- Uretero Pelvic Junction- Ureter - Bladder- Prostate - Seminal vesical and undescended Testis. About the Author
Dr Manickam Ramalingam is Consultant Urologist at K.G.Hospital & Post Graduate Institute, and G.Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, Coimbatore, India. He has already published a book, Update in Urology for Family Physicians and is a well-known nationally and internationall in laparoscopic urology. He is an eminent urologist who has always been interested in education and training in laparoscopic urology through his various presentations and publications. He has published articles in the Journal of Endourology, International Paediatric Endosurgery Group. His main areas of interest are Endo-Urology, Laparoscopic Urology, Pediatric Urology, and Renal Transplantation (550 Renal Transplants to date). Dr Vipul Patel serves at the Medical Director at the Global Robotics Institute, 410 Celebration Place, Suite 200, Celebration, FL 34747, USA. He has personally performed the most robotic prostatectomies in the world, and is one of only two surgeons to have performed 2,000 robotic procedures. He has utilized his skill and knowledge in this field to train and educate surgeons world wide. He is editor in chief of the Journal of Robotic Surgery and of the first robotic urology textbook, both published with Springer. Prior to joining Florida Hospital, Dr. Patel practiced at the Ohio State University where he served as the Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery. The contributing authors will include Professor David Mois Albala, Professor Gopal Badlani, Professor Jens Rassweiler, and Dr Chandra Shekhar Biyani, who have all published extensively.

Well Written, Though Should Not Be $2.99

I don't typically read horror stories, though I will admit, I was somewhat impressed with Holland's "Dark Trails". This collection of short stories is composed of: "Highway 109", "Chamber", "Tower of Obsession", and "Darkfire", plus a poem at the end, "Dark in the Time."

"Chamber" and "Darkfire" were my favorites in this collection, though I felt that both, especially "Chamber", could do very well as longer stories, possibly even of novel length. Other stories, like "Tower of Obsession", I just was not able to get into. That, however, is just one of the troubles of short stories - you only have a limited time to draw the reader in.

That said, Holland's stories are very well written, and there were no glaring errors of note. It is very obvious that Holland is an experienced writer, and overall I was very impressed.

However, this collection should not be $2.99. I'm not sure if that's appropriate to say here, though with so many shorts on Amazon priced at 99 cents, it's difficult to see a collection of shorts selling for triple that price.

swift action and unsettling scenes!

Normally I'm not a reader of horror stories, but this collection of short fiction pieces quickly drew me in. In a rather compressed manner the author riffs on various themes from both science fiction, fantasy and mystery genres. Remarkably, he does it all with a keen eye for movement and action so that this short volume makes both for an easy and very visual reading experience, conjuring up heart-stopping images almost effortlessly.

Pretty cool stories.

I especially liked "Highway 109." Scary and tragic...just the way I like my fiction. I've made a lot of those long, late-night drives, and the thought of being stalked by a psycho is always in the back of my mind.
I didn't see any glaring editing problems with any of the stories.
But I did think the cover looked like it said "Dark Trans" in the thumbnail.

Great place to start

It took me a while, but I finally realized the best way to beat diabetes at its own game was to eat more veggies. While I haven't fully embraced vegetarianism, I have taken to many of the recipes here because they are flavorful, adaptable and well-balanced. Variety is important to keep one's mouth happy, and many of these recipes fit that bill. What is so nice about these recipes is that 1) many require only 4 ingredients which makes them easy to do; 2) they taste good and are easy to prepare; 3) they try to balance out the carbs, proteins and fats we're all trying to balance to keep refueling the ol' engine to keep it running longer. I like the variety of dishes that use mushrooms and beans to provide the protein and these give me options to try when I get into a rut.

I've lost weight, have energy and my blood glucose levels are right where they need to be. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels are better than ever. And I don't really think of this as a diet or a phase-- I really can eat these dishes and feel good. I've made a few for family events and they're hits and I have at least one dish I can dig into. While I'm not really a vegetarian since I do eat chicken and fish, I'm finding that I really enjoy eating these vegetarian dishes and trying out some meals I normally wouldn't have tried. With these, I'm healthier and more satisfied.

Nice compilation of vegetarian recipes that should please the whole family

I have been a vegetarian for somewhere around 26 years or so, I don't even recall--and I was vegan for some of those years as well. One thing I know is that when I entertain I love to sneak in dishes that no one thinks of as vegetarian when I can. I imagine if one member of the family is vegetarian and the rest are not, that is equally important for everyone's satisfaction.

This is a great book for someone who does not often cook but wants to do it well because there are loads of tips within the pages to help you. Do know there are few pictures however, if that is important.

While there is a wide range of variety so that you can please many palettes, I am personally surprised there are not more casseroles--I find those always a guest and family pleaser but there are actually lots of vegan recipes in here and vegan casseroles were always more difficult for me to do--but with that focus, you get exceptionally healthy meals here.

For me I find these recipes great for being a main dish for me and a side dish for others. Most of these are lighter fare although there are some hearty dishes like chili and some vegetarian burgers. They lean more to almost all veggie as the focus with less protein and because of that they are VERY low in calorie--usually around the 200 mark, some as low as 40 or so but really nothing I saw in the 300 mark or above so it's hard to equate them as a meal without bigger servings than are listed in order to get enough calories for the day.

That's the only reason I deducted a star. It's great for weight loss but you could not eat strictly from this book for 3 meals a day or you'd consume far too few calories no matter what you size.

So eat more of the dishes or eat more meals each day or eat these as your light meals and something larger or more hearty for dinner. You choose.

Very healthy but also tasty and even if you are not a vegetarian, they are great side dishes.

And diabetic friendly too!

Interesting food combinations and ethnic influences

Chef Petusevsky proves again and again that healthy food can be delicious. I like many of the recipes because they combine vegetables I have not combined in other recipe before. For example, cauliflower potato mash turned out delicious. It will be something I will be making again! As you might expect there is a large number of Tofu recipes, many as delicious as they are creative.

One thing all recipes have in common is that they are simple to make. Most recipes have only 3 or 4 steps and they are easy to follow. The bottom of the page contains details on calories, sugars, and exchanges.

Most recipes have a small section called Chef Steve's tips. They are clever little morseles that are found educational. Here is an example, if you add three of four ice cubes when puréeing chickpeas they will emulsify the hummus faster and you can use less oil.

The only thing I wish that was different is that I like to see photos next to each recipe. This book has over 120 recipes but only 16 photos in two sections in the middle of the book, not next to the recipes.

If you like interesting food combinations and enjoy ethnic influences in recipes it is likely you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

April Wells (Amarillo, TX) has a BS degree from University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences and an MBA from West Texas A&M. She is a database administrator with over seven years IT experience to her credit. April's current and projected publications include "Oracle 11i E-Business Suite From the Front Lines" (CRC Press), "Grid Database Design" (CRC Press), and "Oracle9i OCP Fundamentals I Exam Cram 2" (Que).

William E. Thater (North Syracuse, NY) is a Senior Oracle DBA and has been an Oracle developer and DBA for the past 19 years, starting his career with version 5.3. William has presented his white papers at RMOUG and has been a significant contributor to both "Oracle 9i DBA 101" (Oracle Press) and "Oracle Security Handbook" (Oracle Press).

Timothy Walker has been Director of the University of Oxford Botanic Garden since 1988. He read Botany at Oxford and five years later was awarded a Master of Horticulture by the RHS. He trained at the Oxford Botanic Garden, Savill Gardens, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, before returning to the Oxford Botanic Garden in 1986 as general foreman. In 1996 he was elected to the post of lecturer in Plant Conservation at Somerville College. Walker is a member of the group of conservation biologists helping to develop the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation and has lectured widely to the public, nationally and regionally. Among his previous books are Euphorbias (RHS, 2000) and Plants: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford University Press, 2012).

Nice intro book

First, I worked for the major disaster recovery company and wrote their planning software along with a few others, so I do have an extensive background and know the material.
Of course this was years ago.

But the VA sent me to college and this was a required course so I had to use this book.

Second, the back of the book says this provides a complete course in developing and implementing a disaster recovery plan. Which is not true. Will you understand the concepts? yes the book does a good job at that. Will you be able to sit in a meeting and understand and contribute to your own companies disaster recovery planning? yep, and you will be in a position to actually be on the planning team.

But you will not be able to write one from this, well not an effective plan.

They do a very good job of underscoring the various aspects of the planning process. Their coverage of risk assessment is actually really good. ( the planning process is actually fairly standard, and the company I worked for originated alot of it. though there were competitiors who did have their own material. ).

They miss the mark a little with the recovery solutions and recovery strategies ( not sure they really even address it well in the book at all. ). The issue is that they seem to be vague on one page, and then very specific on the next. And they could have actually left the discussion at a high level and kept it philisophical.

There is a pretty good website with online material, the links they have to external resources is a little sketchy at times.

This is only 4 stars because the authors fail at one of the statements on the back flap, and that is teaching how to write a plan. If that were the case they would have provided a CD with a plan and discussion in the book on its actual structure.

The other issue, which is minor, is that none of the authors are certified or list their status as certified by the major certification body for Disaster recovery planning. (DRI ).

Overall they do a good job of providing more than a superficial treatment of disaster recovery. And you will be a positive contributor if you were in a meeting with coworkers on disaster recovery. It is better than what you will find surfing the web. Is there better out there? yeah if you went through certification.

Poorly written

Needed this textbook for a class, book is very uninformative and seems to be written by an 8th grader. Was not impressed with the material it covered and what was covered was said in very generic terms. I do not understand why it is so expensive. I rented it from Amazon and found that was the cheapest price.
