About the Author
Ron Mittelhammer is a Regents Professor of Economic Sciences and Statistics at Washington State University. He is also a Fellow of the Journal of Econometrics, a Fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA), and a Distinguished Scholar of the Western Ag. Economics Association. He has over 250 publications and presentations to his credit, including 100 refereed journal publications. He is a celebrated teacher at the graduate level, receiving national and university-wide awards for instruction, including the AAEA Award for Distinguished Graduate Teaching, the Washington State University Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching, and the WSU-CAHNRS Teaching Excellence Award. He served as President-Elect, President, and Past-President of the AAEA from 2008-2011.

Good read on memory improvement

Good short book on improving your memory. The book helps you a lot in learning how to focus well and how to overcome distractions. The exercises to improve your focus is well written and easy to follow. I found it fascinating on how it teaches you the techniques to learning a language. It was an interesting read.

This guide is excellent! I have read many books on the subject and by far this is the best. It's simple and concise. All you have to do is immediately start practicing these techniques. This book is very well organized, which facilitates its understanding and memorization. It is a fascinating read and is one of those books that I keep referring back to. After reading several books on memory this one took a different approach and I found it the most helpful.

A Must Read!! Absolutely Brilliant

My daughter, who is currently in 6th grade, has struggled in school since kindergarten. Homework is torture, her grades are awful, and her attitude toward learning stinks! I have tried everything I can find or can think of to help her, but nothing has worked or given me hope that things will ever change. That is until I found this book! Dr. Charles Fay has written a masterpiece that I wish I had gotten my hands on sooner!! I'm only on the 2nd chapter, but I have obtained so much helpful information already that I can't wait to see what else is in store!! What a relief to finally be able to help my daughter!! A must read for every parent!! Highly recommend!!

From Bad Grades to a Great Life! by Dr. Charles Fay has become my favorite book in the Love and Logic® catalog. I have been facilitating Love and Logic parenting classes for over twenty years, and have shared many of their books, CDs, and DVDs with parents in my classes. This book, however, is one that I am going to suggest that ALL families read, long before their children even enter school. If you only look at the title, you might think my suggestion is a strange one. My thoughts are such, that if you read the book early on in your parenting career, you may never end up dealing with a child's bad grades. Some of the subjects related in the book are: 1) Are we focusing on the right things? 2) What are your child's gifts? 3) What about manners and respect? 4) Do you know how important chores are and how they relate to school success? 5) How much "stuff" does your child have? 6) Would you like to raise a calmer, more motivated child? 7) Can all children be successful? 8) How can your child make a difference in this world?
9) Do you know how to love your child for who he/she is?

Dr. Charles Fay is a psychologist who has been involved with Love and Logic his whole life. Having grown up with Love and Logic, his father being Jim Faye, one of the founders of Love and Logic, Inc.® Dr. Fay is a parent, author, and consultant, and the strategies that he teaches have made a huge impact on many people, including those that have participated in my classes. the master handbook on parenting

As an educator and school administrator, I appreciate everything in this book and want every one of my parents to read it. As a parent, I thank God that I found it. I made so many mistakes while trying to "guide" my own children in the "right" direction, when all I was doing was telling them they were weak and incompetent. This is a brilliant book - it is funny, true and so very poignant. I'm recommending it to my faculty, families and friends. Incredible. I look forward to September and a school year free of struggles about homework - well, MY struggles, anyway! My kids will be able to cope with their own struggles. :)

not for serious programmers

The code presented in this book is painful to look at. For one thing, the author is not familiar with basic Java coding conventions and continues to use C conventions instead.
In addition to not knowing proper coding conventions, this guy has no clue about writing Java UIs - the code listed in this book actually has Visual Cafe tags all over the place!
As far as info regarding spiders/bots/aggregators - there is decent high level overview info in this book, but nothing for a real programmer. You will not learn how to build these things on your own, and the book relies on the helper libraries included on the cd-rom to accomplish anything. If you are hoping to build anything useful after purchasing this book, understand that you will only succeed if you include the com.heaton.* libraries included on the cd.

Lots of working code but not much of a tutorial

Bots are the simplest form of Internet-aware programs in that they simply carry out a repetitive task once unleashed on the web. A spider travels the web in a complex fashion, moving from one part of the World Wide Web to another collecting information from one site and then jumping to another based on that information. An aggregator is a bot that is designed to log into several user accounts and retrieve similar information.

If you need a complete bot, spider, or aggregator written in Java, complete with source code and a detailed manual about that source code so that you can customize it to suit your needs, this is a five star book. However, if you are looking for a book about information storage and retrieval and network programming that focuses on the theory of operation of such software with application code written in Java, you will be sorely disappointed.

The author did such a fine job of documenting his work with excellent diagrams, comments, and the book that reads like a user's manual, that I easily took his Web spider code and modified it to perform many additional tasks that his basic package does not do. All of the hooks are available in his code for you to modify it to collect or examine just about any kind of data accessible via the web.

I highly recommend this book if you are taking an information storage and retrieval class and you would like to read and study something applied on spiders, bots, and aggregators versus the theory you get in most textbooks. Just understand you are getting code plus a user's manual, not a tutorial. You are definitely going to need other resources on Java network programming if you want to study, understand, or modify the included source code. I suggest the latest edition of "Java Network Programming" by Elliotte Rusty Harold for help with the network programming part of bots, spiders, and aggregates. I also suggest you look at "Spidering Hacks", which has many good ideas of features you can add to your web spider.

Misleading Title

As another reviewer commented this book should be called using the com.heaton.bot package api reference. All you learn is how to use this package of java classes, not how to actually create spiders, bots or aggregators from the ground up. I feel the title is misleading for such an expensive book. The only way I will learn what I want is to read the authors source code - which btw is very ugly however functional.
