About the Author
Herbert S. Goldberg was born in New York City and is a Professor Emeritus and Associate Dean Emeritus of the University of Missouri School of Medicine. He has long been interested in bringing knowledge of biology and medicine to the public. He has accomplished this by writing in a variety of medical subjects as well as lecturing in this country and abroad. He has also served on advisory committees of the Food and Drug Administration and the World Health Organization.

it's ok

pretty basic,I read the whole thing in a half hour, maybe 40 minutes.
ok for someone who knows nothing, or very little, about him. There is some interesting information in there, more so on the history of medical advancement, of which hippocrates was incredibly influential. Not bad if you want a quick read and are interested in the history of western medicine.

Hippocrates,

I'm called the "father of medicine". I was the first person to write that people got sick due to scientific reasons. I was born around the year 460 BC on the Greek island of Kos. My father was Heraclides, a physician; my mother was Praxitela, daughter of Phenaretis. I followed in my fathers foot steps to become a great doctor like him. Most people still believe disease is caused by angry gods. I also wrote about how to treat the needs of sick people. I made careful, regular note of many symptoms including complexion, pulse, fever, pains, movement, and excretions. It was my passion to study medicine. I'm hope that all the information and ideas I discover doctors will still study in the future. One idea I wrote about is "patient confidentiality". This means that doctors cannot tell anyone else what their patients tell them. Another idea is that the doctor cannot do anything to harm a patient. I feel that if anyone did try to harm a patient that they should be punished to a full extent. These kind of ideas are called medical ethics. The Hippocratic Oath which I founded is what doctors promise to their patients. This means they give the best care to there patients. One of the many famous lines in the the Hippocrates Oath is " That I will be loyal to the profession of medicine and just to its members". As the founder of the Hippocratic school of medicine, an intellectual school, that revolutionized medicine in ancient Greece,thus making medicine a profession.

Great little book! Very easy to read historical presentation of the beggining of Medicine as a profession as per Asclepius but mostly by Hippocrates. Would make an ideal gift for a medical student as well as for anyone in Medicine or interested in the history of Medicine.

If you're a newbie-yes. Otherwise-no.

First off, I've been seriously metal detecting for a few years now. I bought this book because I really like his youtube videos. Thought I might pick up a few helpful research tips. Not so much. There were 1 or 2 I hadn't thought of, but not enough info to be worth the cost of the book for me. That being said, it's definitely a good book if you're new to the hobby, probably 4 or 5 stars worth. It spells out a lot of stuff that will take you a pretty good amount of time to work out on your own. 3 stars from me because I've already figure out 98% of whats in it. I was hoping for a little more. It'll go in my library and the next time someone shows an interest in the hobby I'll hand them this book to read.
Synopsis: If you're new to the hobby, buy the book. If you've been at it seriously for a year or two, don't bother. (unsolicited plug coming up) Either way, go check out their YouTube videos, "Dirt Fishin America". Really cool stuff they find that'll make you want to get out there and find something yourself.

If you buy one book on detecting this is it. (NOT A BIBLE!)

This is a great book. If you only buy one book on detecting this is the one to get.
It covers everything from basic principles, to tools, scouting sites, parks, beaches, gold
prospecting, permissions, etc, A lot is packed in only 120 pages. Very well written!

As much as I love this book and Highly recommend it.

It is NOT A BIBLE! . . . . . . Not even close to being one.

As inclusive as this book is it does not go into a lot of details. The section on PI detectors is only about
a page long, pinpoint mode is only 4 lines. There is little on what brands, what feature to look for, buying
a detector, where to buy, costs, etc. A bible would show block diagrams of schematics of the internal workings
of detectors, have a forty of fifty page buying guide, a large list of internet sites, clubs, magazines, and useful books.
Manufactures index with web addresses, buying options. how to tell the difference in models, etc.
A list of map sites. A detailed history with pictures charts diagrams. I could go on and on.
On this subject a bible would be at least five or six hundred pages long.........

Not a bible but a very good "beginners guide"

I got this because my brother-in-law just got a metal detector and it's been his new thing. We wanted an activity that we could do together for "family bonding" and thought this was a fun and unique activity. After looking at a few different books, this was one of the ones we picked up to help guide us through this new adventure. This book is amazing! When it says it's your bible, it' speaks the truth. Whatever truth you believe in, this is it. It is a great book for seasoned hunters and newbies a like! This book does a great job of covering everything from gloves to contracts - really a great spectrum of advice for any one who enjoys metal detecting. I had no idea there was even such a thing as swing techniques until I picked up this book [ obviously I fall into the newb category ]. Amazing book! Well written, easy to understand and a must-have for anyone.

Creative, Thoughtful and Brilliant

Possibilities is really the best of scholarship: an incredibly smart, well-read person putting together different strands of thought to create a unique perspective. Noone writing today is better at explaining anarchism and applying anti-hierarchical, anti-authoritarian thinking to a wide range of subjects; knowing that the author is also an activist only enhances his arguments. Can easily be read (and enjoyed) by non-academics. A truly wonderful book.

brain-melts: 4 and counting

Having rushed through the first part of the book (of 3) i feel now compelled to come back and read it again, just to make sure i understood it correctly. Not that the ideas themselves are complicated, but i feel i haven't fully grasped the breath of consequences and interpretations that they provide.

Which is to say: Graeber's book is at once extremely original and extremely relevant. I am pretty sure that i will not be able to face salary-work the same way again after reading his analysis of modes-of-production --- not that i had never heard that a job is a form of slavery, but his arguments make the connection much deeper, albeit more subtle too.

But in the end, what we get is actually a clearer idea of society, both more aware of history and more technologically astute than your usual social scientist.

Finally, he claims that his aim with those texts is to keep possibilities open, and i am pretty sure he achieves it.

I'd love to see this character on TV or in the movies, but for now, I'll have to settle for the printed word

Admittedly, I have never read the original trilogy of books in the John Cleaver series. One of these days I will need to rectify that. I'm also happy to say, it's not necessary to have read any of the other books to enjoy The Devil's Only Friend.

Reminiscent of Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, John Cleaver is a bit of an anti-hero, quick-witted with a sharp tongue, and an urge to kill. An urge that he controls in an unusual way. It's these tendencies that make him good at his job, working for a secret government kill team, using his gift to hunt and kill as many monsters as he can.

The Devil's Only Friend works very well as a stand-alone novel. The writing is crisp and clear. The action fast-paced and intense. I was barely through the first chapter when I realized I was going to love this book. Saving mankind is deadly serious business, but there's just a perfect dash of humor to break the tension once in a while.

Nothing quite goes as expected in this story and by the time it's over, John Cleaver finds himself asking, "Have I been wasting my time trying to be the good guy, when good and bad don't even make sense anymore."

I'd love to see this character on TV or in the movies, but for now, I'll have to settle for the printed word and am eagerly looking forward to the next book in the series.

Can't wait to see what happens next in this dark saga

This review contains spoilers for the first JOHN WAYNE CLEAVER trilogy.

John Wayne Cleaver is a seventeen-year-old boy who wants very, very much to kill people. Lots of them, one right after the other, in terrible, bloody ways. Paradoxically, because he longs to do that, he has been taking extraordinary lengths to avoid becoming a serial killer. His struggles were related in a trilogy consisting of I Am Not A Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, and I Don’t Want to Kill You. That trilogy showed how John’s efforts to avoid acting on his murderous desires ran smack into his discovery of demons, and the very genuine need to kill those demons to save the people he loved. Alas, John was not able to save the people he loved most. As this trilogy opens with The Devil’s Only Friend, John’s bitterness at his failures is on open display, even as he works with a special FBI unit dedicated to rooting out and destroying demons.

Brooke Watson, a girl John’s age who has been mentally broken by her contact with the demon called Nobody, accompanies the team, though she is not precisely a part of it. Her company tortures John, for in essence Brooke is possessed by a demon John killed named Nobody; Brooke retains that demon’s memories, and her mind was so warped by the possession that she still believes she is Nobody. Yet John faithfully spends time with Brook that goes far beyond what is necessary to do his work. The mind of Nobody insists that the Withered (as she calls the demons) are evil, and is eager to assist John and his team to get rid of them, so she’s a tactical advantage for the FBI. They keep Brooke in a secure hospital facility wherever they set up operations.

As the story opens the team is in Fort Bruce, a small city in the Midwest, where they are collecting data on two demons living there: Mary Gardner, a demon who works as a nurse in order to drain the health of others in order to keep herself healthy; and Cody French, who never sleeps, and must download his awareness into another human in order to get some rest — which drives the human mad. Alarmingly, just after the team completes one operation, Brooke reveals that yet another of the Withered is in town. Those who have read Next of Kin will recognize this character, but the team comes to the immediate conclusion that its members are being hunted by the demons. And although they reached that conclusion for the wrong reasons, they happen to be right.

The team unravels the puzzles of the demons, their powers, and how to kill them in this novel, giving it some of the characteristics of a mystery. And the team battles the demons with everything they’ve got, so it’s also an action novel. Both aspects of the novel work well, and they work well together. The pacing is excellent, as the team’s actions go from a seemingly simple operation to a more difficult one to one that seems all but impossible, leading to a climax where everything, including everything that happened in the first trilogy, comes into play. The only criticism I have is that the law enforcement personnel involved have absolutely no notion of the law, and especially of how due cause for a search is established. Perhaps Wells ought to consult with a lawyer or a police officer for his next novel.

What most intrigued me about this novel, and what lends it its bleak darkness, is John’s inner life. John narrates the novel, so he tells us how the mysteries are solved and watches the action (he’s usually not allowed to participate, for several reasons), always with a quickness of thought and a bleakness of aspect. John’s time with demons has not cured him of his desire to hurt and kill animals and other humans; in fact, he has plans for how to kill everyone on his team. He wrestles with his own internal demons, battles that are harder fought than any of those against the outer, physically real demons. Wells delves deep within the brain of a sociopath struggling not to commit sociopathic acts because he knows they are wrong, even as he longs deep within himself to see the blood, to feel the knife entering flesh. “I’m trying very hard not to become a serial murderer,” he tells another member of the team, and we are witnesses to that internal battle. (One of the scariest moments in the novel is when John actually does kill someone: “It was exactly like I’d dreamed it,” John tells us, and then goes on to explain in detail. It’s stomach-turning.)

The ending is both triumphal and bleak, and it’s hard to imagine where Wells will go from here. He has written a book that stands on its own, not dependent on the trilogy that went before and not truly needing the books that are going to come after. I can hardly wait to see what comes next.

Start of another trilogy

This series continues to amaze me. With every release I am afraid that the author Dan Wells will find the need to make John more likable. Don't get me wrong, I like John. I like him because of how twisted he can be. The anger and rage boiling in his character always makes for an entertaining book.

This one does feel quite different then the other three. I thought the first three were mystery horror novels. This one felt more Fantasy then anything. Still a heavy dose of mystery and horror drive the plot. There is a good deal more world building about the demons that inhabit Johns story. They make this book feel more Epic than the previous entries.

If I had to nitpick I would say that to many of the supporting cast are a tad bit cliched and one dimensional. There is enough with them to get a good feel but that was the weakest portion of this story to me.

Still it is John that I read this for and he doesn't disappoint! Spending time in his head can be frightening, but it is never dull. Throw in a great plot that kept me guessing all the way to the end and you have another great John Cleaver book. I know the author is hard work on Book 5 right now and I cannot wait to see what future plans he has for John!

Great For the Aspiring Writer In You!

This item arrived in excellent condition. This program looks like a great tool for the budding and aspiring writer. I love the way the lessons are laid out in a step by step manner, and the book seems very easy to use for self instruction with minimal assistance from the parent. I'm also very impressed with the way that grammar and other language arts aspects are woven into the curriculum for an all-in-one program. My son is looking forward to writing an amazing novel in the near future. :)

For budding young authors

I purchased this product because my 16 year old son, whom I homeschool, desired to write a fiction book and was having trouble with the grammar and sentence construction elements. This book has given him the structure he needs to write his book. He actually asked me if he could work on it on his own, rather than just during school hours. This comes from a kid who has always hated writing, but had a story idea in his head. So far, we absolutely love this book!

How do you eat an elephant? The same way you write a novel...one bite at a time. Thaxton does an EXCELLENT job of breaking down the process into bite-sized steps. Fun exercises guide the students to improve their writing, make a plot pattern, organize thoughts, and embark on writing a novel. The editing section contains 100% of the grammar necessary as well as publishing tools. Our co-op did this class and all of the students didn't write a novel - but some did! If a novel seems too daunting, this guide will still be of benefit. ALL of the students improved dramatically and developed skills that will aid them in other facets of writing.

A one-year or two-year plan is outlined to give a reasonable pace. This book could be just the inspiration your creative writer needs to empower him to get started.

A wonderful tale of surviving against the odds and finding love.

The story of 3 brothers of the heart, Beckett, Cole and Blake is one of those tales that just sticks with you. I cried for these 3 many times but there's room for laughter as well. Blakes story is the original starting point - who can forget how he counts Livia's smiles. Truly heart warming and heart breaking in equal measure, The Poughkeepsie series is one you'll keep returning to again and again.

Everyone out there should be warned that they need to read these books.

I’m not usually a huge 3rd person fan but through Debra’s writing we get to follow 3 young men, each troubled in their own way and how they create lives for themselves after continually getting knocked down.

Went I picked my kindle up I genuinely wasn’t sure what to expect. I can guarantee you it shocked the life out of me when I became so heavily entrenched in the Poughkeepsie way of life.

All of these character have their own demons but Debra’s writing endears you to them flaws and all. In Beckett’s case especially you love him because of his flaws.

How do a review this without giving anything away??

3 young men, failed by the system designed to protect them. One of them turns to God and one of them turns to nature to find their solace. The third sacrifices everything he has to give, bar his life, to protect his brothers.

These books take you through their lives from how they came be the only family each other could count on, to expanding their family in spite of abuse, mental illness and dubious life choices.

This book will have laughing, crying, cursing God but most importantly feeling satisfied.

I cannot stress enough how much you need to have this book in your life.

An emotional rollercoaster from start to end!

I absolutely LOVE this series, it wrenched my heart our from the start until the end. If you want an emotional rollercoaster with characters you don't think you should love, but will anyway. This is the book for you!
